Roles & Responsibilities

1. Patient Assessment & Basic Medical Care

Fresh graduates typically perform BLS-level care :

  • Conduct initial patient assessment
  • Monitor vital signs (BP, SpO₂, ECG monitoring if trained)
  • Provide oxygen therapy
  • Perform CPR & operate AED
  • Manage bleeding and wounds
  • Splint fractures or immobilise spine
  • Assist senior paramedics with advanced procedures when required

2. Emergency Calls (Depending on Company)

Private ambulance companies handle :

  • Medical emergencies (e.g., chest pain, falls, breathing difficulty)
  • Trauma cases (road accidents, workplace injuries)
  • Standby coverage for events, industrial sites, malls, construction projects

Paramedics stabilise patients and transport them to hospitals while continuing care.

3. Non-Emergency & Medical Transport Duties

A major component of private ambulance work includes :

  • Transferring patients between hospitals
  • Transporting dialysis patients
  • Escorting elderly or wheelchair-bound patients
  • Taking patients for scheduled medical appointments
  • Bed-to-bed or home-to-hospital transfers

You are responsible for patient comfort, safety, and basic monitoring throughout transport.

4. Ambulance Operations & Equipment Readiness

Fresh paramedics must :

  • Conduct daily medical equipment checks
  • Ensure oxygen cylinders, AEDs, suction units, and monitors are functional
  • Restock consumables (bandages, gloves, medications as allowed)
  • Keep the ambulance clean, disinfected, and operational
  • Assist with stretcher operation and safe patient lifting
5. Documentation & Communication
  • Write Patient Care Reports (PCRs) accurately
  • Communicate with dispatchers regarding case updates
  • Provide handovers to receiving hospitals or clinics
  • Follow reporting protocols for incidents or equipment faults

6. Safety & Compliance

Private ambulance paramedics must adhere to :

  • MOH guidelines for emergency medical services
  • Infection control procedures (PPE, waste disposal)
  • Company SOPs for case handling and transport
  • Data protection and patient confidentiality standards
7. Customer Service & Patient Interaction

Private ambulance services are patient-facing and service-focused. Duties include :

  • Treating patients respectfully and professionally
  • Assisting elderly or immobile patients
  • Communicating clearly with families and caregivers
  • Maintaining a calm, reassuring presence

8. Event Medical Coverage

Many private companies provide medical standby for :

9. Training & Continuous Professional Development
