Job summary

Job description
The Role

Our client is a reputable organisation within the maritime sector and is seeking to appoint a legal counsel. This role offers broad exposure across shipping matters and is well suited to a lawyer who enjoys a mix of advisory, claims-related, and administrative work.

Reporting to the General Counsel, the successful candidate will assist with the handling of the company’s legal affairs across a broad range of shipping-related matters. A key focus of the role will be advising on charterparty disputes, particularly in relation to laytime and demurrage, as well as independently managing claims and any ensuing arbitration proceedings, working closely with external lawyers and solicitors where required. The role will also involve handling or supporting P&I Club claims, monitoring legal and regulatory developments impacting the maritime industry, and providing clear, practical internal updates to the business.

Requirements:

  • English law and/or Singapore law qualified, with 2–4 years’ PQE and relevant training in maritime law
  • Strong experience in charterparty disputes, including laytime and demurrage, with exposure to dispute resolution and arbitration
  • Experience handling P&I Club claims is an advantage
  • Excellent drafting skills, sound commercial judgment, and the ability to manage multiple matters under deadline pressure, with a collaborative and professional approach
