The Role

We are looking for a Head of Spanish to lead and manage the Spanish department within the Senior School, reporting to the Head of Faculty for Languages and Classics. The appointee will shape the department’s pedagogical direction, oversee curriculum development, and ensure high standards of teaching and learning. Key responsibilities include mentoring and reviewing staff, managing resources, supporting innovation in teaching practices, and embedding real-life learning opportunities aligned with the school’s vision. The role also requires involvement in assessment, examinations, and careers advice, as well as fostering collaboration across departments and external partnerships. Strong leadership, subject expertise, adaptability to teach across pathways (A Level and IB), and the ability to inspire both students and colleagues are essential for success in this position.

Key Responsibilities
1. Leadership
  • To contribute to decisions about the direction and pedagogical philosophy of the Spanish department and Languages and Classics Faculty.
  • To lead the subject in assessing, teaching, organising and developing the curriculum.
  • To act as a pedagogical leader within the subject.
  • To foster a lively and enthusiastic learning environment for teachers and staff within the subject.
  • To identify areas for professional development within the subject.
  • To complete a Subject Objectives Plan each year which outlines future priorities.
2. Teaching and Learning
  • Possess a deep and fluent knowledge of what makes a difference to student learning, in line with the Senior School Inspired Learners Vision.
  • Ensure the thorough implementation of subject specifications, schemes of work, assessment policies and reporting procedures.
  • Create opportunities for students to develop confidence in the subject through carefully planned and managed activities.
  • Support a departmental and whole school culture of innovation that includes varied and exciting teaching approaches, technological integration and thoughtful evaluation of teaching and learning.
  • Possess the experience and flexibility required to teach a range of topics and ability levels.
  • Possess the experience and flexibility required to teach either pathway (A level or IB) in the sixth form.
3. Leadership of the Department
  • To identify real-life learning opportunities for students to apply skills learnt in Spanish and languages.
  • To embed those learning opportunities in the Spanish curriculum in line with Tanglin’s Inspired Learners Vision and our 3-14 curriculum.
  • To assist in the setting of school examinations, to supervise entries for external examinations, and to share responsibility for the support of the public examination process.
  • To assist in providing careers advice relevant to the subject.
  • Be responsible for reporting any concerns about a child to the Designated Safeguarding Lead.
4. Leadership and management of teaching staff
  • To assist in training and developing colleagues in the subject.
  • To advise the school on present and future staffing matters including recruitment, current responsibilities, professional review and development.
  • To lead on the professional review of colleagues in the subject.
  • To manage and support the Spanish Foreign Language Assistant.
5. Planning and development
  • To regularly consider CCA opportunities in Spanish and links to external providers.
  • To assist in providing careers advice relevant to the Faculty.
  • To keep abreast of current developments in the curriculum and to consider such developments in the context of the school’s philosophy for the curriculum as a whole.
  • To explore opportunities to establish links with other departments as well as other international schools through collaboration partnerships.
  • To assist in procuring appropriate resources within the limits of the budget.
  • To assist in recruiting Spanish Foreign Language staff, when appropriate.
6. Monitoring and Evaluation
  • To analyse and interpret relevant school data to inform policies, practices and teaching methods.
  • To monitor teaching standards within the subject and to use this analysis to identify both effective practice and areas for improvement.
  • To assist in ensuring pupils’ work is regularly assessed and that homework is in line with school policy.
  • To assist in the use of information gained from assessment, recording and reporting procedures to generate further improvement in pupil achievement.
