Job summary

The successful candidate will be responsible for pricing, rate negotiation, and freight contract execution. Job Description & Requirements
Freight Trader

We are currently looking for an successful, energetic and experienced Freight Trader to join our team in Singapore office.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Pricing of Freight and Rate Negotiation
  • Communicates with internal traders and vessel owners/brokers to price freight needs; uses FFA and analyzes external price proposals to determine fair market prices; negotiates freight rates and other Charter Party contractual terms.
  • Research information from the freight market through communication with brokers and owners to assist in accurately assessing freight levels and projecting freight levels. Provides information on grain and other bulk flows as well as competitor and supplier activities to the global team as applicable.
  • Assists with internal enquiries and price grids; discloses and discusses pertinent information with the Senior Trader and with the global size desk. Contributes to discussions on pricing for focused markets / flows.
  • In the course of pricing and negotiation, identifies and trades arbitrage and hedging opportunities in the freight derivatives and futures market, and assesses the opportunity of applying a period ship or new period ship fixture against a specific freight sale.
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with external third-party accounts on both grain and other bulk commodity flows that both marry with inhouse flow and also offer strategic opportunities for the period fleet.
  • Freight Contract Execution
  • Sales and purchases are entered correctly and on time into the Freight Platform’s contract module.
  • Works closely with Freight Operations to stay on top of the itineraries, stow plans, and voyage execution PnLs. Ensuring all documentary and administrative requirements are completely in timely manner.
  • Minor problems are resolved in working closely with traders, execution teams and owners. Larger issues are escalated up to the Senior level and/or Size/Regional Manager.
  • Evaluates and monitors contract performance to ensure compliance with contractual obligations and/or to determine the need for changes; consults with other traders on unusual price strategy, policy and operational issues.
  • Adheres to the Corporate and/or Platform Risk, Credit, Compliance, and Ethics guidelines.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Research and evaluate trading partners based on price, quality, selection, service, support, availability, reliability, production, distribution capabilities, reputation and history.
  • Undertake and completes training on: Time charter and Voyage charter parties, FFA contract negotiation and execution; Vessel bunkering hedging and execution; Internal freight accounting practices; Internal freight IT systems.
  • Data management in the freight system.
  • Other document task related with China flow.
Professional Requirements:
  • Bachelor or Master’s degree in Engineer/Mathematics/Finance/Economics/Maritime Concentration.
  • 4+ years of relevant experience within dry commodities/ supra/handy/panamax desk.
  • Excellent oral/written English and preferably one other language.
  • Strong MS Excel Skills. Data science and Statistics skills.
  • Strong analytical and interpersonal skills.
  • Self-motivated, assertive and emotional intelligence.
  • Working Conditions
  • Fast-paced trading-floor environment. This position considered to be “on call” 24/7 in order to complete time-sensitive projects, attend training or to respond to emergencies.
  • Availability for business travels required.
