Job description
Overview

Founded in 2020, NEU Battery Materials is a Singapore‑based climatetech company that developed the world’s first patented electrochemical redox recycling method to recycle used lithium batteries. The company focuses on extracting critical lithium from lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries that are found in electric cars and energy storage systems, which will be key in developing a circular supply chain. NEU aims to be the largest, cleanest, and most neutral source of recycled lithium globally. NEU’s contribution to electrification and circularity has been recognized by the likes of the Temasek Foundation, BloombergNEF, Forbes Asia, and many others.

We are expanding our current scale of operations and are seeking an electrochemical researcher to join the team. This new position will play a crucial role in our process through development and scale‑up to commercialization. Working closely with the Engineering team, you will research electrode fabrication and material synthesis for electrolyzer cells for our cutting‑edge recycling equipment to accelerate the advancement of pilots and concepts to scalable, refined commercial products.

Responsibilities

Technical Leadership & Strategy

  • Spearhead the design, development, and optimization of electrochemical systems including alkaline electrolyzers and integrated devices
  • Set technical direction for electrolyzer performance targets and material requirements in alignment with commercial needs based on organizational targets
  • Lead system‑level integration: stack design, balance‑of‑plant considerations, and durability testing

Experimental Design & Execution

  • Planning and development of the Company’s lithium recycling process line as part of a team
  • Design and develop experimental setups for electrochemical cell characterization and performance optimization
  • Optimize electrolyzer systems through device design and component analysis
  • Develop, test, and fabricate novel electrodes, electrocatalysts, and electrode assemblies for advanced electrolyzers
  • Conduct hydrogen and oxygen evolution reaction (HER/OER) studies in alkaline media
  • Perform wet chemical and instrumental analyses to gather high‑quality experimental data for analysis and interpretation

Innovation, IP, and Collaboration

  • Prepare and submit grant proposals and patent applications; communicate findings to both technical and non‑technical audiences
  • Conduct literature reviews and stay abreast of emerging research, technologies, and patents in the field
  • Collaborate with chemists, engineers, and external research partners to advance NEU’s IP portfolio

Team & Project Management

  • Manage a team of researchers and engineers
  • Provide mentorship, task delegation, and project progress tracking
  • Report milestones to the CTO and support cross‑department alignment
Requirements
  • PhD, or MS/BS with equivalent experience, in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Electrochemistry, Materials Science, or a related field
