The Dental Surgical Assistant position supports a busy 12‑surgeon practice at five locations. The ideal candidate will be flexible, a team player, and hold a Dental X‑Ray Certification (or obtain it within six months of employment).

Responsibilities
  • Assist oral surgeon in clinical treatment of patients.
  • Perform infection control: protective wear for all patients and employees, instrument maintenance, sterilization, waste management.
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with Network and departmental policies regarding safety, documentation, and reporting.
  • Demonstrate service‑excellence standards in all customer and internal interactions.
  • Continuously improve in clinical care, customer service, operations, and safety.
  • Use financial resources efficiently in daily procedures.
  • Observe attendance and dress‑code policies.
  • Assess, range of treatment, growth and development, and communicate appropriately with patients of all ages.
  • Prepare operatory: ensure rooms are ready, stocked, and clean before each appointment.
  • Oversee operatory cleanliness throughout the day.
  • Support other office duties: greeting patients, answering phones, scheduling appointments as needed.
  • Greet patients at sign‑in and monitor arrival times.
  • Develop and maintain patient flow processes with physicians.
  • Seat patients and set up for procedures.
  • Review medical history, record blood pressure and pulse.
  • Confirm X‑ray is current and of diagnostic quality.
  • Show care and concern for patients, ask about position, offer reading material, avoid leaving patients unattended.
  • Be available when the dentist starts treatment and anticipate dental needs.
  • Provide post‑operative instructions and manage gauze changes, reporting uncontrolled bleeding to the dentist.
  • Escort patients from the treatment room.
  • Take and develop X‑rays.
  • Perform clinical procedures delegated by the dentist.
  • Monitor patient flow and report to the manager.
  • Update patient health history at each visit.
  • Record information during anesthesia cases.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the dentist.
  • Ensure staff have antiseptic hand cleaner and clean paper towels.
  • Ensure employees are equipped with protective wear (eye protection, facemasks, gloves, gowns, etc.).
  • Instruments and equipment management: discard disposables, assemble soiled instruments, disinfect, ultrasonic clean, rinse, maintain hazardous chemical list, sort by tray, load/activate/vent sterilization unit, store instruments and trays, unpack and store inventory.
  • Sterilization area upkeep: mix cleaning solutions, maintain fresh supplies, clean ultrasonic units and autoclaves, perform monthly spore test, keep logs current, maintain clean area, monitor refrigerator temperatures, maintain supply inventory, submit orders monthly or as needed.
  • Waste management: discard needles in labeled containers, decontaminate regulated waste, apply warning labels.
  • Maintain drug inventory and log usage for daily/monthly audit.
  • Comply with policies on hazardous materials and blood‑borne pathogens.
Physical & Sensory Requirements
  • Requires sitting, standing and walking for extended periods (up to 8 hours at a time).
  • Uses fingers for patient care, writing, and chart handling.
  • Handles items up to 25 lbs; pushes cart with supplies up to 30 lbs.
  • Pushing wheelchair with a patient weighing up to 325 lbs.
  • Stoop, bend, reach above shoulder level regularly.
  • Adequate hearing for normal conversation and taking blood pressure readings.
  • General vision, near vision and peripheral vision required.
Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma.
  • Graduate from an ADA‑accredited dental assisting program or have 3+ years of dental assisting experience; completion of coursework in dental instruments and procedures.
  • Compliance with state dental practice requirements (X‑ray certification within 6 months, OSHA training).

Training & Experience

  • Legible handwriting for patient chart documentation.
  • Computer skills for charting.
