Job Scope
Core Responsibilities
  • Report to the Master and lead the Engine Department.
  • Responsible for safe and efficient operation, maintenance, and management of all onboard machinery and technical systems.
  • Delegate engine room watches at sea and in port.
  • Manage boilers, propulsion units, cargo handling equipment, and all onboard machinery and electrical systems.
  • Oversee the Planned Maintenance System (PMS) in line with Company guidelines.
  • Maintain accurate engineering records and report regularly to Fleet Management Department (FMD).
  • Ensure cleanliness and upkeep of machinery spaces and storage compartments.
  • Monitor and manage inventory of fuel, lubricants, engine stores, and water.
  • Maintain Oil Record Book Part I per Safety Management System procedures.
  • Keep Master informed of machinery issues affecting seaworthiness.
  • Ensure maintenance of engine room life-saving and fire-fighting equipment.
  • Promote crew familiarity with emergency systems and enforces PPE usage.
Engineering Practices & Discipline
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable rules, regulations, and Company instructions.
  • Supervise engineering staff and maintain discipline and efficiency.
  • Allocate watchkeeping duties to ensure competent oversight of machinery spaces.
Training & Safety
  • Support training of Junior Engineers, cadets, and ratings.
  • Promote safety culture and investigate incidents, near misses, and conducts risk assessments.
  • Ensure crew compliance with safety regulations and emergency procedures.
  • Supervise engineering tasks for professional execution.
  • Test and record emergency machinery performance.
  • Maintains clean and operational machinery spaces.
  • Ensure firefighting and monitoring equipment are functional.
Communication & Documentation
  • Communicate technical matters to FMD via Master.
  • Conduct Root Cause Analysis for major failures and reports follow-up actions.
  • Safeguard technical documentation including instruction books, diagrams, and survey records.
  • Maintain and update machinery-related plans and manuals.
Fuel Oil & Bunkering
  • Ensure sufficient fuel oil of suitable quality is available for voyage.
  • Supervise all bunkering operations and maintains five-day reserve policy.
  • Monitor daily bunker tank levels and advises Master accordingly.
  • Promote economical fuel usage.
Plant & Electrical Management
  • Conduct frequent inspections of machinery and spaces.
  • Ensure efficient and safe plant operation.
  • Maintain alternators, generators, wiring, and electrical equipment.
  • Prohibit unauthorized installations or modifications without Company approval.
Voyage & Port Repairs
  • Coordinate with Master on vessel stay duration for repair planning.
  • Submit Risk Assessment and Safe Working Procedures to Company for immobilization approval.
  • Ensure Master is informed of maneuvering limitations during repairs.
Change of Appointment
  • Relieving Chief Engineer must inspect machinery spaces and equipment with outgoing Chief Engineer.
  • Review outstanding and completed repairs/surveys.
  • Confirm availability of technical documentation and records.
  • Assess operating parameters and daily consumables usage.

  • Holder of valid Class 1 Certificate of Competency
  • At least 12 months experience as Chief Engineer onboard
