Job description
Overview

We are hiring a Business Intelligence (BI) Engineer on a 6–12-month contract to support and deliver end-to-end BI initiatives. This role spans the full BI lifecycle—data engineering, data integration, analytics, governance, stakeholder management, and (depending on readiness) computational modelling. The BI Engineer ensures insights are actionable, secure, and aligned with organisational priorities.

Responsibilities
  • End-to-end BI delivery: Deliver BI solutions from discovery and requirements through to build, testing, deployment, stakeholder enablement, and continuous improvement. Ensure deliverables are reliable, well-documented, and fit-for-purpose for decision-making.
  • Data modelling and engineering: Support the design and development of data structures for analytics (e.g., staging models, dimensional models, semantic layers). Build and maintain ETL/ELT pipelines using SQL and relevant integration/orchestration tools (batch and, where needed, near real-time). Validate and reconcile data across multiple sources to ensure accuracy and consistency.
  • Data integration across systems: Support interoperability and data flows between enterprise systems (e.g., student information systems such as student system HRMS, and analytics platforms). Map and integrate data from databases, APIs, and operational applications into analytics-ready datasets.
  • BI reporting, analytics, and visualization (Power BI): Create and maintain dashboards and reports in Power BI that track operational KPIs such as enrolment, retention, withdrawals, resource utilisation, and performance drivers and trends. Build reusable datasets/semantic models that support consistent KPI definitions and reporting. Apply visualization best practices and ensure outputs are actionable for business users.
  • BI database operations support: Assist with monitoring, troubleshooting, and maintaining BI data stores (cloud and/or on-prem). Support access provisioning and controls to ensure secure and appropriate permission levels. Maintain runbooks, data dictionaries, and technical documentation for BI assets.
  • Stakeholder management and requirements translation: Gather requirements, clarify objectives and responsibilities, and translate business needs into clear BI specifications. Communicate progress, risks, dependencies, and changes in a timely and professional manner.
  • Governance, change management, and adoption: Apply change management practices to BI deliverables (dashboards, datasets, pipelines), including versioning and controlled releases. Prepare communications, release notes, and guidance to support stakeholder adoption. Support alignment of BI outputs with business priorities, risk considerations, and governance expectations.
  • Security and compliance alignment: Embed security controls in BI workflows (least privilege, secure access, data handling practices). Contribute to secure-by-design thinking for data integration and analytics solutions.
  • Project management support: Support planning and execution of medium-scale BI initiatives (e.g., dashboard rollouts, new dataset releases, predictive model pilots). Track milestones and deliverables and coordinate stakeholders to ensure successful delivery.
  • Emerging technology evaluation (as applicable): Contribute to evaluating emerging analytics capabilities (e.g., ML platforms, LLM-enabled analytics features) to improve BI processes, with appropriate governance and controls.
Requirements
  • Relevant qualification in IT, Computer Science, Data/Analytics, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Power BI proficiency (dashboard creation, data modelling concepts, KPI reporting).
  • Solid foundation in SQL (joins, aggregations, data validation; familiarity with modelling concepts).
  • Understanding of BI concepts (KPIs, reporting workflows, visualisation practices, data quality).
  • Good problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and willingness to learn across domains.
  • Clear communication and documentation skills.
