Role Context
The District Cooling Engineer will provide practical engineering and site support for central cooling infrastructure serving airport terminals, support buildings, and associated facilities. The position will follow plant systems from equipment installation and piping works through inspection, pre-commissioning, functional testing, documentation, and final handover. Working within a multidisciplinary airport environment, the Engineer will coordinate mechanical works with Civil, Structural, Electrical, Instrumentation, BMS, SCADA, QA/QC, HSE, and commissioning teams. The objective is to identify installation issues early, maintain technical compliance, and help deliver reliable chilled water systems that are ready for safe long-term operation.
Key Responsibilities
- Support construction and technical activities associated with district cooling plants and chilled water infrastructure.
- Review approved mechanical drawings, specifications, equipment schedules, Method Statements, and technical documentation.
- Monitor installation of chillers, chilled water pumps, condenser water pumps, cooling towers, and heat exchangers.
- Verify mechanical equipment installation against approved drawings, technical requirements, and manufacturer recommendations.
- Check equipment foundations, supports, alignment, vibration isolation, connections, and installation clearances.
- Monitor installation of primary and secondary chilled water pumping systems.
- Inspect chilled water and condenser water pipework for routing, levels, supports, and installation compliance.
- Verify valves, control valves, strainers, flexible connections, flow meters, and associated mechanical accessories.
- Support inspection of expansion tanks, pressurization equipment, filtration systems, water treatment equipment, and chemical dosing systems.
- Monitor insulation, equipment protection, preservation, and associated mechanical finishing works.
- Coordinate contractor activities to ensure installation follows approved designs and construction procedures.
- Assist with equipment submittal reviews, material approvals, certificates, and technical documentation.
- Support preparation and resolution of RFIs, Technical Queries, and site engineering clarifications.
- Identify installation constraints and communicate technical concerns to the appropriate engineering teams.
- Participate in construction progress meetings, technical reviews, and multidisciplinary coordination sessions.
- Coordinate mechanical interfaces with Civil and Structural teams for equipment foundations, openings, supports, and access requirements.
- Work with Electrical and Instrumentation teams on power, controls, sensors, and equipment interfaces.
- Coordinate BMS and SCADA interfaces required for plant monitoring and control.
- Support equipment delivery inspections and verify appropriate storage, handling, and preservation before installation.
- Coordinate with QA/QC teams during mechanical inspections and testing activities.
- Review relevant WIRs, MIRs, ITPs, equipment certificates, and test documentation.
- Identify defective or non-conforming work and communicate findings for corrective action.
- Support NCR investigation, rectification, reinspection, and closure.
- Assist commissioning teams with preparation and implementation of pre-commissioning and commissioning activities.
- Support pressure testing of chilled water and condenser water pipework.
- Monitor flushing and cleaning activities before system commissioning.
- Assist with equipment pre-commissioning inspections and readiness checks.
- Support pump testing and verification of operating performance.
- Participate in chiller commissioning and performance verification.
- Assist with cooling tower commissioning and associated condenser water system checks.
- Support functional testing of valves, instruments, sensors, and control devices.
- Participate in BMS and SCADA interface testing for district cooling equipment.
- Record commissioning results and identify deviations from specified acceptance criteria.
- Coordinate technical resolution of issues identified during testing and commissioning.
- Assist with commissioning checklists, test records, equipment documentation, and completion dossiers.
- Maintain technical records covering inspections, equipment status, test results, and commissioning activities.
- Prepare punch lists and track incomplete or defective works through resolution.
- Support phased commissioning where cooling infrastructure must be brought into service progressively.
- Coordinate district cooling interfaces with terminals, support buildings, distribution networks, and surrounding infrastructure.
- Work within airport access, safety, security, and operational restrictions applicable to assigned construction areas.
- Follow project HSE procedures during lifting, installation, pressure testing, equipment start-up, and commissioning.
- Participate in toolbox talks, site safety inspections, and other required HSE activities.
- Support final system verification and preparation for operational handover.
- Assist in confirming that completed district cooling assets are documented and ready for transfer to operations and maintenance teams.
Ideal Profile
The position requires a bachelor 's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or another related engineering discipline. Candidates should have at least two years of relevant experience involving HVAC, district cooling, chilled water systems, mechanical construction, or MEP projects. The successful candidate should understand the basic operating principles of district cooling plants and the relationship between chillers, pumps, cooling towers, heat exchangers, chilled water networks, and condenser water systems. Practical familiarity with mechanical pipework, valves, expansion and pressurization systems, water treatment, filtration, and associated plant equipment is valuable. Candidates should be able to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, equipment schedules, Method Statements, and Inspection and Test Plans. Basic knowledge of pressure testing, flushing, equipment pre-commissioning, functional testing, and commissioning documentation is required. Experience on airport, infrastructure, major building, MEP, or district cooling projects will strengthen suitability. The role requires familiarity with QA/QC procedures and safe working practices for mechanical installation, lifting, testing, and commissioning. Candidates should be comfortable coordinating with contractors, consultants, engineers, inspectors, and multidisciplinary project teams in an active construction environment.
