Software Engineer – OpenStack – Canonical

Overview

Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems, including Ubuntu. We are hiring a Software Engineer for our OpenStack Engineering team to build and maintain Charmed OpenStack and Ceph, a suite of open‑source Python‑based charms that deploy and manage OpenStack and Ceph environments. The role supports cloud‑platform technologies across desktops, bare‑metal servers, and a variety of architectures, and requires a Python developer who is passionate about infrastructure‑as‑code and open‑source automation.

What You'll Do
  • Collaborate proactively with our globally distributed team
  • Write high‑quality code to create new features
  • Debug and resolve issues, producing clean, maintainable code
  • Review code produced by other engineers
  • Contribute to the success of OpenStack and Ceph across architectures
  • Travel internationally several times a year, generally one week at a time
  • Work from home, with global travel for internal and external events (2–4 weeks per year)
Who You Are
  • Passionate about technology and collaborating with brilliant minds
  • Curious, flexible, articulate, accountable, and self‑motivated
  • Possess a Bachelor’s or equivalent degree in Computer Science, STEM, or related field
  • Have strong experience with Python development
  • Have experience or interest in at least two of the following: Ubuntu Linux, Kubernetes, OpenStack, Ceph, AI/ML, QEMU/KVM, LXC/LXD, Go, C, Postgresql, Mongo, Debian packaging, scalable web services
  • Have experience with non‑x86 architectures (e.g., s390, arm64, Power)
  • Have experience with OpenStack, OVN, OpenvSwitch, and related cloud technologies
