Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This post provides experience working with a specialist team to deliver Palliative Care in the acute hospital setting.


Key clinical duties at UHL:

  1. Participate in the face-to-face holistic assessment and management of hospital inpatients who have been referred to the hospital Specialist Palliative Care Team.
  2. Prescribing of appropriate palliative and anticipatory medications to manage common symptoms of patients.
  3. Undertake discussions with patients and families, including advance care planning when appropriate.
  4. Contemporaneous note keeping in medical records both on paper and electronic formats.
  5. Provide clinical supervision of resident doctors on medical wards about palliative care issues.
  6. Provide senior medical input into the Palliative Care Team across UHL.
  7. Support FY2 doctors on the team.
  8. When asked, to support the shadowing of medical students from Leicester Medical school as part of their training rotation.
  9. Help ensure safe and effective care when people move between different care settings, by adding to discharge letters, making appropriate referrals and providing guidance about medicine authorisations.

Person specification

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • MB BS or Equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration
  • Current BLS Certification

Desirable criteria

  • MRCP or MRCGP or equivalent
  • Membership of relevant Specialist bodies e.g. Association of Palliative Medicine
  • Advance communication skills training

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria

  • At least 4 years whole time equivalent working as an employed doctor with at least 24 months of this time working as an employed doctor in the UK NHS system
  • Evidence of an interest in Palliative care and holistic care in practice
  • Evidence of ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team, supervising juniors and sharing administrative duties

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of or a willingness to rapidly develop skills in Palliative Care

Communication and Relationship skills

Essential criteria

  • Ability to work sensitively within a multicultural community
  • Demonstrates skills in written and spoken English that enable highly effective communication with patients and colleagues
  • Well developed emotional intelligence

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of leading teams and awareness of leadership styles
  • Ability to motivate and develop both medical staff and non-medical staff

Analytical and Judgement Skills

Essential criteria

  • Ability to effectively organise, prioritise and manage clinical workload
  • Ability to work to overcome barriers to change (negotiating, influencing and persuasion skills)
  • Knowledge and understanding of Clinical governance issues
  • Understanding of wider health agenda and modern NHS
  • Effective participation in and a commitment to clinical audit and quality improvement work

Desirable criteria

  • Evidence of participation in journal clubs or similar
  • Completion of formal courses in audit and quality improvement
  • Published audit and/or quality improvement work

Teaching Skills

Essential criteria

  • Evidence of teaching at undergraduate and peer level, with willingness to develop teaching skills

Desirable criteria

  • Teaching qualification courses

Planning and Organisation skills

Essential criteria

  • Demonstrates clear logical thinking/analytical approach
  • IT Skills, ability to use web browser, MS 365, electronic patient systems

Disclosure and Barring Service Check

Please note if you are successful in obtaining this position and the post involves regulated activity you will be required to undertake a Disclosure & Barring Service check.

The Trust will pay for the check initially and the money will then be deducted from your salary over a three month period commencing on your first month's payment.

The current price of a check is £38 for an enhanced and £18 for a standard check.
