About Us

The Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine brings together disciplinary strengths in biomedical sciences, clinical research and public health to improve human health. Our Faculty encompasses world-class departments—from neuroscience and structural molecular biology to infectious diseases and population health—maintains close ties with NHS partners, and is committed to translational research and high-quality teaching.

Dr. Alessandra Vigilante leads a research group of bioinformaticians with expertise in multi-omics data integration and translational bioinformatics. She is Head of the Hub for Applied Bioinformatics (HAB), which provides collaborative analysis support, specialist training, and consultation across genomics, transcriptomics, spatial biology, and AI/ML. Dr. Vigilante also leads the Applied Bioinformatics MSc at King’s College London, training the next generation of computational biologists. This post is part of the Mind and Skin project, a collaborative study led jointly with Professor Carsten Flohr, and the successful candidate will work closely with both teams, interacting directly with clinicians and scientists to support integrative analysis across sleep, MRI, and cognitive datasets.

About the role

We are seeking a maternity cover Research Associate to support the data science workstream of the Mind and Skin project, a collaborative research initiative investigating the interplay between dermatological and mental health conditions. The successful candidate will work closely with an interdisciplinary team of clinicians, neuroscientists, and data scientists, contributing to high-impact research with strong translational relevance.

The post holder will bring strong programming, data analysis, and integration skills, with experience in biomedical datasets. They will contribute to the early development of the data integration pipeline, incorporating outputs from processed brain MRI, cognitive testing, and newly acquired sleep datasets. Specific responsibilities will include:

  • Cleaning, managing, and analysing sleep data
  • Setting up the foundation for a multimodal data integration pipeline
  • Collaborating with team members responsible for neuroimaging and cognitive data
  • Producing reproducible code and documentation to support future scaling
  • Participating in regular project meetings and research updates

This is a full time (35 hours per week), and you will be offered a fixed term contract until 11 January 2026 (maternity cover).

This position is anticipated to begin in September and will be based in London. While some flexible or hybrid working may be considered, regular in-person collaboration will be required.

About You

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

  • PhD in bioinformatics, biomedical sciences, or a related quantitative field *
  • Proven experience in analysing biomedical datasets using Python and/or R
  • Experience working with complex data types
  • Demonstrated ability to develop data processing or integration pipelines
  • Familiarity with high-performance computing environments and version control systems
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present and document research findings

*Please note that this is a PhD level role but candidates who have submitted their thesis and are awaiting award of their PhDs will be considered. In these circumstances the appointment will be made at Grade 5, spine point 30 with the title of Research Assistant. Upon confirmation of the award of the PhD, the job title will become Research Associate and the salary will increase to Grade 6.

  • Experience with multi-modal biomedical data analysis, including single-cell transcriptomics
  • Demonstrated ability to apply Python and R to complex biological datasets
  • Exposure to advanced data analysis techniques showing adaptability to new domains like sleep or neuroimaging data
  • Experience working in interdisciplinary and collaborative research environments
  • Track record of scientific communication, including poster presentations and talks at national and international conferences
