Purpose of the Role
To assist in leading and managing the commercial team working within your allocated portfolio of multidisciplinary light rail projects (primarily within the Midland Metro Alliance structure - MMA), from inception through to final account and close out, to deliver maximum commercial results.
Person Specification
Working in a finance or commercial function within the engineering or construction sector with hands-on experience working for contractors as a Commercial Manager on large civils or infrastructure projects.
Working knowledge of finance systems and various forms of contracts.
- Cost and budget administration
- Financial and commercial reporting to board level
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office
Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years Commercial Management experience as an SQS or QS with a proven track record in major projects.
Preferred but not Essential
- Degree in Quantity Surveying or Commercial Management accredited by RICS or CIOB.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, manage, develop, and train the commercial teams across your portfolio of projects in collaboration with the Commercial Manager.
- Raise commercial awareness and embed best practices across each project team.
- Lead on all contractual matters from inception to close-out, understanding the contract and its implications for profit.
- Assist in preparing contract documents, including bills of quantities, specifications, and drawings.
- Manage the Risk & Opportunities process during tender and construction phases, ensuring contractual solutions and strategies balance risks and opportunities.
- Set and manage budgets, ensuring costs are allocated into the relevant WBS.
- Establish and update project lifecycle cost forecasts monthly, monitoring against targets.
- Record contractual entitlements, notify events timely, and accurately price and substantiate changes.
- Maintain rigorous cost controls, early warning systems, and produce robust financial reports, including EVM.
- Support procurement to deliver projects safely, timely, cost-effectively, and with quality.
- Validate procurement expenditure with operational teams and allocate under the budget as needed.
- Manage contract cash flow and ensure AFP submissions and assessments align with contractual timelines.
- Ensure supply chain payments are made per agreements.
- Negotiate and settle contractual disputes and final accounts within DFA levels.
- Undertake other reasonable duties as requested.
