What you’ll be getting up to
- Collecting and loading a variety of waste and recycling streams from domestic and commercial properties, streets, and open spaces across the borough
- Driving and operating council vehicles, including Class C HGVs, safely and efficiently, while meeting all legal and operational requirements
- Completing daily vehicle safety checks, cleaning, and reporting defects in line with council procedures
- Using digital systems to record and report exceptions, ensuring accurate information flow to colleagues and residents
- Responding to minor emergencies such as flooding, obstructions, and damaged street furniture, and supporting council events when required
- Maintaining high standards of health and safety for yourself, colleagues, and the public, while delivering excellent customer service
Who we’re looking for
We’re looking for a reliable, safety‑conscious individual who can deliver excellent customer service while operating in a fast‑paced environment. You’ll need to be adaptable, work well as part of a team, and take pride in maintaining high standards.
Qualifications
- Full UK driving licence with Category C entitlement (or willingness to work towards this)
- Current Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence), minimum of 2 years for new starters
Experience & Skills
- Previous experience in waste and recycling collection services, including driving refuse collection vehicles and rear‑steer HGVs
- Strong understanding of health and safety procedures and correct use of PPE
- Ability to lift and carry heavy loads, walk long distances, and work outdoors in all weather
- Confident working under pressure with minimal supervision, while maintaining accuracy and safety
- Excellent communication skills for dealing with colleagues and the public professionally
- Flexible approach to working hours, including occasional out‑of‑hours work to meet service needs
