Job description
Overview

Ward Manager (Band 7) for an 18 bedded Surgical Enhanced Care Unit (ECU). The ECU supports Transplant Surgery, elective theatre cases, emergency theatre cases, emergency pathway patients and patients transferred from General Critical Care. This leadership role is essential to maintain KPI's and to provide a pivotal leadership role.

Interviews are scheduled for 22 January 2026.

Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.

Main duties of the job

The role is essential to provide this ward area with a high profile, accessible and responsive leader, accountable for clinical staff, service, governance, standards, safety and quality.

  • Accountable for own actions in accordance with Code of Professional Conduct. Will contribute towards corporate objectives, acting within local, Trust and statutory guidelines and policies at all times.
  • Highly developed communication skills enabling maintenance of high quality service and ensuring timely management and resolution of unexpected events and situations. Undertake bleep-holder responsibilities for the area on a regular basis.
  • A knowledgeable team leader and resource for staff, advising on national, local and Trust policy and procedures/guidelines, ensuring that clinical governance is embedded in practice. Will support staff and users in service and policy development within a defined area/specialty.
  • Responsible for identifying and assessing complex clinical and non-clinical issues, implementing resolutions and monitoring/auditing outcomes.

Job responsibilities

The role is essential to provide this ward area with a high profile, accessible and responsive leader, accountable for clinical staff, service, governance, standards, safety and quality.

  • Responsible for interdepartmental/organisational activities including HR; complaints; appraisal; hospital bleep-holder responsibilities on a regular basis and patient flow.
  • Undertake highly specialised technical and/or practical skills to ensure optimum patient management including; complex patient monitoring; equipment management and administration of invasive tests/procedures.
  • Responsible for education and training provision of identified staff groups, patients and carers within defined areas.
  • Utilise and ensure others utilise information and IT systems to secure accurate and timely patient, workforce and resource data available.
  • Regularly manage expected and unexpected clinical events requiring high but unpredictable levels of physical effort according to patient dependency/clinical need.
  • Regularly support patients, carers and staff during difficult situations arising in the clinical area, e.g., breaking bad news or following an unexpected event.
  • Promote and monitor adherence to Health and Safety and Trust policy designed to protect healthcare staff and service users from known hazards.
