Overview

Job Title: VMware Architect

Location: Portsmouth (potential visits to Glasgow)

Your role

We are seeking a highly skilled VMware Architect to lead the design and implementation of enterprise-grade virtualisation solutions. The role focuses on delivering secure, scalable, and high-performance environments using VMware vSphere, vSAN, and Horizon View. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to architect virtual desktop infrastructures (VDI) and support secure remote access deployments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Architect and deploy VMware vSphere environments with integrated vSAN storage solutions.
  • Design and implement Horizon View platforms to deliver Windows 10/11 virtual desktops and applications.
  • Lead the creation of reference images for Horizon deployments, including optimisation and security hardening.
  • Configure Horizon Connection Servers, Horizon Agents, and supporting infrastructure components.
  • Integrate Horizon View with Active Directory in a secure environment.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to define business and technical requirements, constraints, and risks.
  • Provide guidance on backup strategies and data protection for Horizon environments.
  • Support migration and refresh cycles for Horizon reference images and desktop pools.
Skills and Experience
  • Proven experience designing and implementing VMware Horizon View environments in secure enterprise settings.
  • Deep knowledge of VMware vSAN architecture and performance optimisation.
  • Familiarity with VMware vCenter, and ESXi host management.
  • Strong understanding of Horizon deployment planning, including display protocols (Blast Extreme, PCoIP), desktop pools, and application provisioning.
  • Ability to work independently and lead technical discussions with stakeholders.
  • Excellent documentation skills for design decisions and implementation guides.
Desirable Qualifications
  • VMware Certified Professional (VCP) or equivalent.
  • Experience with Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) for image automation.

This role will require you to become security cleared to a high level. Please note the National security vetting: clearance levels - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk).
