Job description

We are looking for an experienced Virtualisation Engineer to join the team that powers Arm's engineering compute platform. In this role, you will play a key part in redesigning our on‑premises Virtualisation stack and crafting our hybrid‑cloud infrastructure strategy. Your work will directly impact the productivity of engineering teams by delivering scalable, automated, and resilient infrastructure services. You will work closely with other teams to design, build, and support next‑generation compute environments that meet the demands of high‑performance engineering workloads. The Staff Virtualisation Engineer will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining private cloud environments using data centre virtualisation (VMware, Harvester, OpenShift, etc.) technologies. This role requires a deep understanding of virtualisation, cloud infrastructure, and automation to support the organisation’s hybrid‑cloud strategy to enable and empower engineering teams using technology platforms.

Hybrid Working

Arm’s approach to hybrid working is designed to create a working environment that supports both high performance and personal wellbeing. We believe in bringing people together face to face to enable us to work at pace, whilst recognising the value of flexibility. Within that framework, we empower groups/teams to determine their own hybrid working patterns, depending on the work and the team’s needs. Details of what this means for each role will be shared upon application. Please talk to us to find out more about what this could look like for you.

Responsibilities
  • Design and deploy private cloud environments using Virtualisation and software‑defined data centre (SDDC) technologies. Develop automation tools and modules to optimise infrastructure operations, ensuring high availability, scalability, and performance.
  • Monitor the health and performance of hybrid‑cloud infrastructure, debug and resolve issues related to virtualisation and system reliability, and provide technical support and mentorship to engineering teams and internal users.
  • Partner with multi‑functional teams to understand infrastructure needs and deliver effective solutions. Communicate project updates and issue resolutions clearly. Maintain comprehensive documentation of processes, configurations, and standards.
  • Stay ahead of evolving private cloud and automation technologies. Continuously identify and implement improvements in infrastructure, automation, security, and monitoring, and promote standard processes for infrastructure reliability and maintainability.
  • Bring deep expertise in building and maintaining enterprise‑grade private cloud environments, using Virtualisation and SDDC technologies such as VMware, KVM, OpenShift, and OpenStack.
  • Drive the design and implementation of scalable, fault‑tolerant infrastructure patterns tailored for high‑availability, production‑critical environments.
  • Demonstrate a solid grasp of software‑defined compute, storage, and networking, and design hybrid cloud solutions that seamlessly integrate on‑prem and public cloud environments.
  • Architect and implement automated workflows for both virtual and bare‑metal infrastructure using tools such as Terraform, Ansible, Puppet, Foreman, and BMaaS platforms, enabling repeatable, reliable infrastructure delivery.
  • Define and implement standards for IaC and configuration practices, helping engineering teams adopt and scale automation across the organisation.
  • Integrate infrastructure automation into CI/CD pipelines, enabling continuous delivery of platform changes. Experience with API‑driven infrastructure and alignment with Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles is highly valued.
Qualifications
  • Certification in OpenStack, Virtualisation, SDDC, or related fields.
  • Knowledge of containers such as Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Experience working in or with DevOps, SRE, or platform engineering teams.
  • Experience with monitoring and observability tools for hybrid‑cloud environments.
  • Diligence and continuous learning mindset.
