Job summary

A local council in Cradley Heath is seeking a Fleet Technician to ensure the safe operation of its diverse vehicle fleet. Responsibilities include performing scheduled maintenance, diagnosing faults, and conducting inspections. Qualified candidates should have a Level 3 NVQ in Automotive Maintenance and relevant licenses. This is a full-time position that offers a supportive working environment and opportunities for further training.

Qualifications

  • Candidates must have a level 3 NVQ in Automotive Maintenance and Repair.
  • Experience in Heavy Commercial Vehicle workshop required.
  • Candidate must have LGV Class 2 Category C Licence or be willing to obtain it.

Responsibilities

  • Perform maintenance and repairs on vehicles and equipment.
  • Conduct inspections and MOT preparations.
  • Attend roadside breakdowns and provide recovery support.

Job description

As a Fleet Technician, you’ll play a vital role in ensuring the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of Sandwell MBC’s diverse fleet.

Working from our central depot, you’ll maintain a wide range of vehicles and equipment that support essential in-house and external services such as housing repairs, grounds maintenance, highways operations, household waste collections and street cleansing.

Responsibilities
  • Perform scheduled maintenance and repairs on vehicles and equipment, including engines, gearboxes, chassis, and electrical systems.
  • Conduct inspections and MOT preparations in line with DVSA standards and regulations.
  • Diagnose faults across hydraulic, pneumatic, fuel, and electrical systems using advanced diagnostic tools.
  • Carry out welding, fabrication, bodywork, and painting tasks within workshop capabilities.
  • Prepare new fleet items for operational use, including livery application and modifications.
  • Attend roadside breakdowns and provide recovery support, ensuring safety and compliance.
  • Mentor and support apprentices and junior staff, contributing to their development and training.
Requirements
  • Level 3 NVQ Automotive Maintenance and Repair
  • LGV Class 2 Category C Licence – Candidates will be accepted with a category B licence and provided training in order to obtain the required category C licence in 12-months.
  • Experience of conducting maintenance, inspection, repair and test services for a diverse fleet including vehicles such as light vehicle van/Tipper's, Small Plant machines, Sweepers, and Large Refuse Vehicles.
  • Experience of working in Heavy Commercial Vehicle workshop.
  • F gas licence.
  • Fork lift operator’s licence.
  • Tail lift LOLER certification.
  • Level 3 Award in Electric/Hybrid vehicle system repair & replacement

Hours: 37 hours per week
