Transport Planning Manager – General Haulage Division
Colchester, Essex
£40,000 - £50,000 (depending on experience)
Monday - Friday, Days (flexible between 7am - 9am start)
A leading logistics business is seeking a Transport Planning Manager to join its Colchester operation. This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced planner with strong leadership skills to take ownership of a busy planning function and drive operational performance.
Responsibilities
- The Transport Planning Manager will be responsible for overseeing and developing a team of planners, ensuring the efficient management of daily operations across general haulage, groupage, tramping and pallet network activity. The role requires someone who can combine commercial awareness with operational expertise, making strategic decisions on freight allocation between the in-house fleet and the pallet network.
- Leading, coaching and developing a team of transport planners.
- Managing the planning of national routes, inbound and outbound flows, and day 1 for 2 activity.
- Taking full ownership of planning performance, efficiency and service levels.
- Making commercial decisions on ad-hoc pricing and backload opportunities.
- Overseeing the use of planning tools (currently Sterling).
- Monitoring fleet performance using tracking and telematics systems.
- Supervision of route planning, resource allocation and management, driver supervision.
- Manage the development and performance of the organisation's general haulage division.
- Negotiating and managing 3PL haulier rates; performance management of all 3PL hauliers.
- Customer service - resolving customer issues/complaints and ensuring critical KPI's are met.
Candidate
- Transport planning management background of a national general haulage fleet.
- Proven experience in transport planning within general haulage and/or pallet network operations.
- Background in leading or managing a team of planners.
- Sharp, commercial approach to decision-making and planning.
- Knowledge of national operations, tramping and backload optimisation.
- CPC qualification (desirable but not essential).
- Confident in balancing pricing, service and cost efficiency.
- Ability to develop relationships and negotiate rates with third party hauliers.
- Strong customer service skills.
- Competent decision making.
- Ability to work under pressure and to deadlines.
