Job description

Unlock your Superpower working on High Voltage Assets to support the efficient power flow on the High Voltage Transmission System.

We’re looking for an engineer who has a background in working with high voltage transmission assets to support variable scale high priority projects to ensure our HV assets are available to serve the power flows across England and Wales.

As the Transmission Network Engineer you will assure, with authorised support (or depending on experience), the project design, delivery, and recovery process for all Primary and Secondary technology types, including faults and investigations. You will ensure that, within your area of engineering expertise, the business has optimal scope definition and solutions for each individual project or incident investigation. Additionally, you will ensure that the highest standards of Safety, Quality, Sustainability, Environmental considerations, and Resilience are applied in the process of maintaining high power system reliability.

Your contributions will also be vital in assisting with the annual Asset Health Review, ensuring the reliability and performance of our critical infrastructure. This role requires national travel across England and Wales.

This role is based out of one of our National Grid offices, and we’d hope to see you at least two days per week but you’re welcome to be in the office more often if that would work best for you. We’re happy to discuss any additional flexibility in working patterns or requirements that you feel could help to make this job work for you!

We are interested to review which transmission assets you have experience with and could become part of the team to support multiple technologies. These technologies include High Voltage Wound Plant, Bushings, Instrument Transformers, Cables and/or Reactive Plant.

What You’ll Do
  • Support the development of standardised solutions for asset interventions.
  • Technically manage external contracts, contractor and stakeholder relationships and direct framework consultants, to drive consistency and ‘value engineering’, working in partnership with wider NG teams as appropriate.
  • Provide obsolescence and commissioning advice as appropriate on ‘Secondary Technologies’ to either Asset Lifecycle or Occupiers representative.
  • Provide technical input and advice, to the wider business by providing1st and 2nd line technical support on secondary technologies, and upon experience where required by the Network Engineering Manager, on Primary Technologies.
  • Author, develop, advise on, implement and maintain Work Specifications, Operational Engineering Safety Bulletins and Technical Guidance Notes as appropriate and ensure all lessons learned and best practice are incorporated as required.
  • Coordinate technical investigations through the role of Technical Secretary, within scope of competency and progress to completion subsequent engineering investigations.
  • Undertake audit and incident analysis in support of health of engineering and commissioning reviews and recommend performance improvements and providing assurance on the status of transmission engineering.
  • Work seamlessly with Development and Delivery teams to ensure the efficient and effective delivery of the NARMs Programme, whilst ensuring the execution of National Grid governance requirements.
What You’ll Have
  • Experience in site work in the particular area of engineering expertise, including proficient understanding of procedural requirements – particularly associated with NARMs schemes.
  • Knowledge of design, extension and lifetime management of assets associated with particular area of engineering expertise.
  • Good understanding of ET Operations Policy and Procedure.
  • Working knowledge of NG Safety Rules and National Safety Instructions.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of successful project delivery.
  • Experienced in effective communication skills, including the ability to make persuasive presentations to multi-disciplined teams / audiences.
  • Experienced in building and maintain relationships internally and externally with key stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of ISO9001 and the application of Quality Management Systems within NARMs projects.

Salary range between 54,090 - £64,000 dependent on experience
