Overview

Trainee Health Physicist – Aldermaston, Berkshire, RG7 4PR. Job Type: Full-Time. Salary: £29,490 - £44,230 per annum + negotiable. Hybrid working is available (typically 3 days onsite per week). Location: RG7 4PR, located between Reading and Basingstoke, with free onsite parking. AWE operates a 9-day working fortnight and we will consider flexible working requests (e.g., term time contracts or part time).

AWE is currently recruiting for a Trainee Health Physicist for the Radiation Protection and Dosimetry Group. The Radiation Protection and Dosimetry Group is part of the Science function at AWE. We provide legal and technical advice to a range of internal and external customers regarding health and safety in relation to working with radioactive materials and other sources of ionising radiation.

Our work covers a wide range of applications and customers, from nuclear manufacturing facilities to forensic laboratories, new build facilities to decommissioning old ones, and work in security operations. Each presents its own challenges, meaning that every day is different.

Responsibilities
  • Support the Radiation Protection and Dosimetry Group in providing legal and technical health physics advice related to ionising radiation and radioactive materials.
  • Learn and participate in the full spectrum of the two-year health physicist training scheme, including training modules and placements around the business to develop professional capabilities.
  • Work with colleagues in multidisciplinary environments and communicate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • As training progresses, work towards professional accreditation as a Radiation Protection Adviser and chartered status with the Radiation Protection Council.
  • Manage workload in a priority-changing environment with initiative, enthusiasm, flexibility, and the ability to meet tight deadlines.
Qualifications
  • Either operational experience in health physics, dosimetry, environment, radioactive waste management, health and safety (ESH) or other related fields, or a degree in a science, technology or engineering discipline.
  • Willingness to apply experience and knowledge to learn how to become a radiation protection professional.
  • Ability to work calmly in a changing environment and communicate with a wide range of stakeholders.
