The role

As a Test Engineer, you’ll be at the heart of maintaining and repairing critical nuclear cranes and facilities that keep the Royal Navy operational. This is more than a job, it’s a chance to make a tangible impact on national security while advancing your career in a dynamic, highly skilled environment.

Day-to-day, you’ll be responsible for the maintenance/repair and breakdown on Nuclear Cranes and Nuclear Facilities within Devonport.

  • Carry out inspection, testing, calibration, and commissioning of systems and equipment in line with authorised documentation.
  • Diagnose faults and propose effective corrective solutions.
  • Identify and record defects, ensuring emergent work is properly recognised.
  • Ensure safe operation of all plant and processes under your control.
  • Comply with Nuclear Site Licence and Modification Authorisation Conditions.

This role is full time, 35 hours per week and is based on site at Devonport Royal Dockyard. There is an opportunity for Optimised Working Patterns (OWP) within this role. Whilst OWP is not guaranteed; it involves a 4‑week shift cycle consisting of either day/back shift or day/night shift. If you would like to know more about OWP please contact the Recruitment Team.

Essential experience of the Test Engineer – Mechanical/Electrical
  • Maintenance, repair, or breakdown experience on heavy‑duty mechanical systems.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with teams and stakeholders.
  • Ability to complete accurate documentation promptly.
  • Comfortable working at height.
Qualifications for the Test Engineer – Mechanical/Electrical
  • ONC or NVQ Level 3 (or above) in an engineering discipline.
Security Clearance

The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Standard (BPSS) / Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.
