Job description
Job Overview

A critical part of the work we do is the daily upkeep of the rail network. As a technician you will work outdoors in a team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely and smoothly for passengers and freight users. Our technician community comes from a variety of backgrounds, so you might be the first to consider a career in rail. We focus on your transferable skills and behaviours and, if demonstrated, we will provide all the necessary training for you to work safely and competently out on the network. If you make the grade you can look forward to a rewarding and fulfilling career with a company that recently joined the top 50 in the Glassdoor 2021 Best Places to Work. This is an electrical-based role that requires you to already be qualified in electrical installation at a minimum of NVQ Level 2 (NVQ Level 3 preferred).

About The Role

Our technicians provide the essential link between the team leader and the team’s operatives. You will work outside in all conditions, day or night, and be involved in demanding manual work that often requires transporting kit across tricky terrain. A safety-focused, respectful, rule‑conscious team player is critical, as you will frequently work next to moving trains traveling at high speed.

Responsibilities
  • Support the team leader and ensure safe, efficient work delivery.
  • Transport kit and carry out maintenance tasks in challenging outdoor environments.
  • Check that the team has the required competencies and meet strict safety standards.
  • Model safe working behaviours and confidently challenge any potential risks to safety.
Qualifications
  • Electrical installation qualifications: minimum NVQ Level 2 (NVQ Level 3 preferred).
  • Level B High Voltage certification (eligible for Level 2 competence).
  • City & Guilds C&G 2382 and C&G 2365 or an advanced apprenticeship in railway engineering with an electrical E&P bias.
  • Equivalent courses such as those provided by armed services.
  • Evidence of previous electrical industry experience verified by the Route Head of Asset [E&P] or their delegated authority.
  • Other acceptable qualifications: City & Guilds 236 Part 2, 2360, 2330, 2365, 2357, 8202, or 5357 and 2381; BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or Electrical Installation; EAL Level 3 Diploma in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or Electrical Installation.
Skills & Competencies
  • Leadership – able to lead, motivate and direct a team for safe and efficient work delivery.
  • Effective communication – strong skills to deliver clear instructions to the team and other colleagues.
  • Technical – knowledge and experience of inspection, faulting, maintenance and renewal techniques in the discipline.
  • Safety – consistently role‑model safe behaviours, arrange and implement safe systems of work, and challenge unsafe situations.
  • Problem‐solving – persistent in finding safe and effective solutions and keeping skills and knowledge up to date.
  • Willingness to learn – continuously develop technical and non‑technical skills.
  • Relevant qualification – ideally an NVQ Level 1 or 2 linked to the discipline, or equivalent level of experience.
Requirements
  • Shifts – changing pattern including days, nights and weekends.
  • Outdoor working – comfortable in all weathers.
  • Safe working – subject to drug and alcohol testing, medical assessment and BPSS checks (including hearing and eyesight examinations).
  • Driving licence – Category B to drive Network Rail vehicles.
  • Commute – within a 60‑minute commute of the location.
