Job summary

An environmental organization is seeking a Technical Author to work with the UK BAT team. In this role, you will draft Best Available Techniques (BAT) Conclusions and engage with Technical Working Groups to create environmental standards. Job Overview

Do you want to make a lasting positive change to the environment? As a Technical Author in the UK BAT team you can. We are fully committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. You will work on Large Slaughterhouses and Animal by‑products installations, using "Best Available Techniques" (BAT) to reduce emissions to air, water and land. The BAT concept is built on a transparent, collaborative, data‑ and evidence‑led process that safeguards and builds on the current high levels of environmental protection. Central to this process will be the UK BAT Author.

Responsibilities

As the UK BAT Author you will:

  • Draft BAT Conclusions.
  • Liaise with Technical Working Groups.
  • Present a final document suitable for publication as a new, UK‑wide, environmental standard for industry.
  • Participate in large‑scale events and communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Work with, and write technical documents, ensuring clear, accurate and persuasive communication.
  • Support a safe, inclusive, and incident‑free workplace and participate in incident management training where required.

Qualifications & Experience

Minimum 5 years working experience and a solid understanding of environmental regulation in the slaughterhouse and animal‑by‑products industry.

  • Specialist knowledge and understanding of the Slaughterhouse and Animal By‑Products industry.
  • Good understanding of process engineering, environmental issues.
  • Good understanding of environmental legislation and policy in the UK.
  • Capability of critically analysing technical arguments and data.
  • Ability to work with, and write technical documents.
  • Good project management skills and a drive to complete.
  • Experience with the slaughterhouse and animal‑by‑products industry.
  • UK and EU industrial environmental legislation, in particular the IED and the Environmental Permitting Regulations.
  • Skill in collection and technical analysis of complex industrial data.
  • Understanding of the implications of BAT Conclusions in permits, on industry and the environment.
  • Verbal and written communication.
  • Building and maintaining relationships.
  • Planning, prioritising and organising tasks and resources to ensure timely and effective results.
  • Responding flexibly to challenges and adept at building consensus.
  • Ability to work effectively with people from different backgrounds and cultures and actively encourage others to consider diversity issues in their work.
Additional Details

Contract length: up to 2 years from appointment.

Job location: UK (travel and overnight stays may be required).
