Job description
Teaching Associate in Philosophy (Fixed-Term) (ARTS272625)

The Department of Philosophy wishes to appoint a Teaching Associate in Philosophy, with expertise in the areas of metaphysics, continental philosophy, and philosophy and mortality.

We are inclusive, welcoming, and caring, and pride ourselves on our positive community. Diversity is vital to our success and fundamental to our values, and we want to continue to tackle issues faced by underrepresented groups in Philosophy. You will be able to demonstrate an ability to make a positive difference in this regard. We are particularly keen to receive applications from people who are currently underrepresented in the field.

Shortlisting is anonymous (by criteria-based questions rather than CV or letter): we cannot see any personal data or the ‘Additional Information’ section in your application until shortlisting is completed.

About the role:

In the spring semester you will contribute to teaching and assessment for the level 1 module ‘Mind, Knowledge, and Ethics’ (Ethics), and you will supervise and assess some undergraduate dissertations. In the autumn semester you will convene and teach some or all of the undergraduate modules ‘Metaphysics, Science, and Language’ (level 1, 10 credits), ‘Continental Philosophy’ (level 2, 20 credits), and ‘Philosophy and Mortality’ (level 3, 20 credits). You will be responsible for assessment in each module, marking coursework and/or exams as appropriate.

Course materials from previous years will be available for all modules. They can be reviewed, edited or adapted to suit your own philosophical vision.

You will have an excellent track record of delivering quality teaching to undergraduate students. You will have teaching experience in at least some of the required areas. You must have a PhD already awarded (or to be awarded by time of appointment) in Philosophy.

The well‑being and development of our students is of utmost importance to us, so the successful candidate will take a proactive role in the pastoral support of students. You will also be responsible for a reasonable share of departmental administration, and the ability to collaborate effectively with others is essential. You will be expected to engage in professional development related to teaching and engage with local and national teaching developments.

This post will be offered on a fixed‑term, full‑time contract, commencing 31 January 2026 until 30 January 2027.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Professor Fiona Ellis, Head of Department, email: Fiona.Ellis@nottingham.ac.uk. Applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
