Job description
Overview

Are you an English graduate with a passion for your subject and a desire to inspire the next generation? Teach Hurst gives you the opportunity to get straight into the classroom and earn a salary whilst training to teach on-site at Hurstpierpoint College, one of Sussex's most successful independent schools. You’ll earn a salary from day one, gain hands-on classroom experience, and receive fully funded training — all while living on our campus just 20 minutes from Brighton.

Teach Hurst is a highly desirable teacher training programme. Last year we received over 1000 applications. If you are excited by this opportunity we encourage you to apply as soon as possible.

What’s on offer
  • A competitive starting salary from day one of £31,000, increasing as you progress through the programme.
  • No fees — fully funded teacher training including sponsorship of PGCE and Early Career Teachers (ECT) training.
  • Free on-site accommodation at our Sussex campus, twenty minutes from the city and beaches of Brighton and within easy reach of London by local rail links.
  • Free meals during term time, and access to a wide range of sports and leisure opportunities as part of our Co-curricular programme.
  • On completion of the Teach Hurst programme, many continue their career at Hurst into positions of responsibility with pay increases to match.
What we are looking for
  • Talented and enthusiastic graduates who can demonstrate a passion for working with children.
  • We value all our teachers and recognise that every teacher's experience and background is important, whether you join straight from university or after another career path.
Why Teach Hurst?

"The main aspect that drew me to Teach Hurst over a regular PGCE route was the way in which I was able to work in the classroom straight away. This may seem daunting but I was supported by my mentor and a large group of colleagues who were beginning their training."

- Mr Nick Chadwell, Housemaster and Business Studies Teacher

Programme structure

In essence, the programme consists of:

  • Year 1: Building classroom experience, knowledge and pedagogy through observation and class teaching on a reduced timetable.
  • Year 2: A fully funded, in-school PGCE course provided by Buckingham University. Increased teaching load and further responsibility.
  • On completion of Year 2 you will gain QTS (qualified teacher status) and progress onto the Early Teacher Career Framework and the Hurst qualified teacher scale with a reflective salary increase. Throughout the ECT period you will continue to be mentored and given the opportunity to take on roles of responsibility and leadership across the college.

If this is the opportunity for you — don’t wait!

Safeguarding

Hurstpierpoint College is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. Applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.
