About the School

University College School was founded in 1830 to promote principles of liberal scholarship. Our aim is intellectual curiosity, breadth of study and independence of mind. We foster independence of mind, value individuality, and create a diverse and inclusive community. Academic results are excellent. Music and drama are strong, and the school offers a wide range of co-curricular activities and enrichment opportunities.

The English Department

English at UCS fosters a love of literature and language, encouraging pupils to read widely, think critically, and write with precision and creativity. In recent years, over 90% of A-level or Pre-U results have been graded A. GCSE Language and Literature results are consistently above 90%. The department follows Edexcel International GCSE specifications for English Language and English Literature and Eduqas at A-level.

Within programmes of study and examination specifications, teachers pursue their own schemes of work, typically in collaboration with colleagues. Weekly meetings allow staff to share best practice and establish common objectives. The department organises a wide range of co-curricular events, theatre trips, and academic workshops. It runs clubs and societies such as the Diversity Book Club and the Advanced Reading Group. The Gunn Essay Prize and UCS Poetry Competition are major annual events. The English Department has six teaching rooms, extensive resources, ICT provision, and a library of critical material.
