Job summary

A leading transportation solutions company in Manchester is seeking a Systems Engineer to provide technical support for the installation and maintenance of the National Motorway Communications System. Ideal candidates will have a degree or HNC in engineering-related subjects, experience in customer-facing roles, and extensive knowledge of MS Windows and Linux systems. Qualifications

Overview

Systems Engineer — Location: Manchester, United Kingdom | Full time

Responsibilities

We require highly skilled individuals that are self-motivated and able to work independently. Reporting to the Project Manager, the Systems Engineer will be responsible for providing technical support and expertise to the Project Manager for delivery of the installation, commissioning and maintenance activities for projects. Initially focused on supporting the operations of the live National Motorway Communications System (NMCS2), they will ensure delivery and maintenance tasks are undertaken to a high technical standard in accordance with the allotted project plan.

Qualifications and experience
  • Qualification to degree or HNC level in an engineering, maths or science related subject.
  • Previous experience in the traffic industry and National Highways would be advantageous but is not essential.
  • MS Windows and Linux configuration and system administration including:
    • Build and maintain clusters
    • Operation of Hypervisor and virtual machines within clusters
    • System administration - Linux, LUCI
    • Linux shell and scripting tools including bash
    • DRBD (Distributed Replicated Block Device)
    • Disk partitioning
    • IP networking skills; addressing, subnetting, routing
    • Router/Switch set up
  • Previous work in customer facing roles.
  • Providing operational and technical support to customers, system users and other stakeholders.
  • Fault investigation including collection, recording and dissemination of relevant diagnostic information.
  • Production of high-quality technical documents such as system design specifications, operator manuals, test specifications, test records.
