Job description

The Post holder will be accountable to quality assure and develop undergraduate medical education.

Responsibilities
  • Ensuring the development of innovative and attractive ways of delivering effective undergraduate teaching
  • Working within the overall learning and development structure and resources within the Trust.
  • Work closely with colleagues who have similar roles for the University of Sunderland to ensure that resources available for surgical undergraduate teaching
  • Analysis of quality data and supporting the Undergraduate Team to develop and implement strategies to improve the quality of the students’ learning experience.
  • Attendance at relevant curriculum committees, pastoral, and assessment meetings with the University, acting as a link between the University and the Trust.
  • Contribute to the strategic vision of the Trust and the identification of Faculty of Medical Education objectives
  • Plan, allocate and direct workloads in order to achieve deadlines, agreed work plans and required service standards.
  • Curriculum mapping to ensure the correct learning outcomes are being met
  • Attend any relevant meetings including departmental bimonthly meetings
  • Act as an examiner for clinical medical student exams hosted by North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Trust
  • Academically mentor 4th and 5th year medical students from Newcastle University
  • Act as a point of contact for Students and Clinical Teaching Fellows who wish to raise a concern
  • Lead on the provision of Surgical undergraduate teaching for Newcastle University Medical students in conjunction with the other Consultant Surgical Undergraduate consultant
  • Develop and maintain excellent working relationships within simulation team
  • Develop and maintain excellent working relationships
  • Actively engage in both internal and external educational meetings
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with patients and their carers
  • Deliver training and examinations for prolonged periods of time requiring prolonged concentration
  • Plan and deliver structured and opportunistic teaching in clinical skills for all staff and students which meets the student learning outcomes.
  • Provide clinical teaching to medical students and physician associate students
  • To design, develop, co-ordinate and deliver programmes of teaching and learning for undergraduate medical students

  • Ensure students are provided with surgical teaching conforming to the Newcastle University Curriculum
  • Mentor and supervise students and monitoring of e-portfolio
Management and Leadership Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with the LEP Undergraduate faculty
  • Develop and maintain excellent working relationships and represent the Trust with Newcastle University
  • Ability to deal with unpredictable interruptions to deal with complex pastoral issues
  • Lead by example and act as a role model for medical students
  • Actively lead on recruiting patients for the undergraduate department database and ensuring this data is secured as per the Trust data security policies
