Project Engineer

Location: Manchester – 2 Home / 3 days in the office

Salary: 40,000 - 60,000

Role Overview

The Project Engineer will be responsible for managing the engineering delivery of multiple structural steelwork projects, ensuring all designs, drawings, calculations, and technical information are delivered safely, on programme, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.

The role acts as the primary technical interface between Hare, clients, consultants, and internal teams, coordinating engineering activities across design, detailing, procurement, fabrication, and site through the full project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities
Project & Engineering Management
  • Manage engineering programmes across multiple structural steel contracts.
  • Coordinate engineering resources, drawing schedules, and deliverables in line with project programmes.
  • Maintain cost awareness and support commercial control through efficient engineering delivery.
  • Ensure all engineering outputs meet quality, programme, and contractual requirements.
Client & Stakeholder Liaison
  • Act as the main technical point of contact for clients, consulting engineers, and design teams.
  • Coordinate closely with internal departments including project management, fabrication, procurement, and site teams.
  • Attend design meetings, coordination meetings, and site meetings as required.
Engineering Deliverables & Information Control
  • Manage the production, checking, issue, and approval of structural calculations, GA and fabrication drawings, technical submissions and reports.
  • Prepare Drawing Registers (e.g. Drawing 001), preliminary material take-offs, and bought-out item schedules.
  • Ensure effective document control and accurate flow of technical information across all teams.
Technical Queries, Variations & Reporting
  • Manage Technical Queries (TQs), RFIs, and ITQs, reviewing prior to submission.
  • Coordinate responses with internal teams and external consultants.
  • Support the identification and management of variations.
  • Provide regular engineering progress updates and programme reports.
Fabrication, Site & Compliance
  • Ensure engineering outputs are fully aligned with fabrication and site requirements.
  • Attend site visits, inspections, and coordination meetings as required.
  • Ensure compliance with company quality systems and procedures, NSSS and relevant British / European Standards, project-specific specifications and client requirements.
Performance Focus
  • Deliver engineering packages within agreed cost and programme targets.
  • Achieve zero non-conformances through robust checking and quality control.
  • Maintain accurate engineering registers, trackers, and project records.
Qualifications & Experience
  • HNC minimum in Civil or Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Degree in Civil / Structural Engineering preferred.
  • Associate or Chartered membership of IStructE (or working towards) preferred.
  • Typically 4-10 years’ experience in structural steelwork or related construction engineering roles.
