Job description

***PREVIOUS APPLICANTS NEED NOT APPLY***

The Sterile Services (HSDU) at the Great Western Hospital supports operating theatres, endoscopy, clinics, community dentistry, podiatry services, and external customers.

This is a non-patient-facing role that is very patient-focused, with the patient at the core of everything we do.

The environment is busy and active, requiring flexibility to respond to workload peaks and troughs. The role involves handling surgical instruments, so the ability to deal with the sight of blood is necessary.

Please note: This Band 2 role does not support sponsorship for skilled worker visas.

The team is responsible for decontamination, checking, assembly, packing, sterilization, and delivery of surgical instrument packs to internal and external customers. We are looking for more individuals to meet growing service demand.

You should enjoy detailed work, be prepared to learn the names of surgical instruments, and work within a department that uses standard operating procedures and a Quality Management System. Being part of a committed, strong team is essential. We pride ourselves on our quality and service for patients.

Experience in decontamination, cleaning, or sterilization is advantageous but not necessary, as extensive training is provided. A full UK driving license is required, as transportation is provided for some external customers.

The role involves the collection, decontamination, packing, sterilization, and dispatch of medical devices across the Trust site.

Our STAR values—Service, Teamwork, Ambition, and Respect—guide everything we do, aiming to deliver great joined-up services to our community and empower individuals to lead healthier, independent lives.

Benefits include:

  • Onsite training and support
  • Opportunity to gain a nationally recognized qualification in Decontamination
  • Pension scheme
  • Occupational Health service
  • NHS Discounts

Key responsibilities:

  • Collecting, receiving, checking, and washing surgical instruments and medical devices from clinical areas
  • Delivering and collecting endoscopes from local sites using Trust vehicle
  • Checking and assembling medical devices across surgical specialties following SOPs with speed and accuracy before sterilization
  • Working cooperatively with colleagues and exchanging routine information
  • Following departmental policies in all duties
  • Training new staff on activities
  • Organizing daily work tasks and making judgments on job-related facts
  • Ensuring accurate record-keeping within the quality management system
  • Visiting wards and departments to requisition and deliver sterile supplies and external customer packs
  • Storing and rotating sterile packs in the Sterile Store for rapid turnover
  • Staging stock for external customers outside the Trust
  • Adhering to Health & Safety at Work Act provisions
  • Complying with the Trust’s Immunisation Policy, including Hepatitis B immunization
