Overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 5 Staff Nurse on the Endoscopy unit at Airedale. This is a JAG accredited unit with four functioning rooms. The unit provides a five day and out hours service, including a nurse on call rota. The function of the endoscopy unit is to provide a safe environment where patients receive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures using a flexible endoscope. These include OGD, colonoscopies, flexi-sigmoidoscopies, ERCP, cystoscopies, and a respiratory service including EBUS and bronchoscopy, which are performed on the unit supporting national programmes for urology and respiratory disease. The unit is part of the National Bowel Cancer screening programmes, working in collaboration with Bradford Teaching Hospital.

Responsibilities
- Responsible for delivery of care needs and maintenance of clinical standards under direction.
- The development of programmes of care and the implementation, evaluation and updating of care programmes.
- Carry out all relevant forms of care without direct supervision and may be required to demonstrate procedures and supervise registered and unregistered staff.
- Be accountable for personal nursing practice and maintain a high standard of patient care as associate nurse/named nurse; assess, plan, implement and evaluate programmes of patient care.
- Be aware of current development and research in clinical practice, to JAG standards.
- Act as a mentor/assessor to students and Health Care Support Workers; participate and assist in research at ward/unit level; undertake study to meet the requirements of PREPP.
- Act as a role model for junior staff; practice the Endoscopy Nurse Skill Set (Band 5).
- Work as a team assisting and supporting colleagues; monitor and audit the quality of the service; involve users in service development; observe all Trust policies and procedures.
- Maintain professional development and competencies; be committed to training and development of yourself and staff within the unit, ensuring appropriate facilities and guidance for training of nursing staff, junior medical staff and trainers.
- Liaise and support other departments and wards; support ward teams and supervise the service.
- Undertake training as required to develop competence in the Endoscopy Nurse Skill Set and respect for the scope of professional practice; participate in on-call rota once competency assessments are completed.
- Maintain custody of controlled drugs, including checking, administering, and maintaining ward stock; assist medical staff and relay patient condition and instructions to medical staff.
- Carry out nursing procedures and acts in a professional manner; contribute to teaching and assessing learners within the requirements of the NMC.
- Coordinate patients' special diets in accordance with any pre-procedure preparation; support theatre staff with GA endoscopies; organise nursing care plans including admission and discharge in line with District Transfer Policy.
- Assist in requesting repairs of equipment and advise patients on the care of their property.
- Learn to use and maintain specialised endoscopy equipment and video equipment; knowledge and skills within respiratory services (bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound and therapeutic drains) and urology cystoscopy, insertion of catheters.
Qualifications and expectations
- Endoscopy Nurse Skill Set (Band 5) and current nursing registration; IRHA/BSC or diploma in nursing as applicable.
- Commitment to training and development of self and colleagues; willingness to participate in on-call rota after competency assessments.
- Ability to work as part of a team, support colleagues, and act as a mentor/role model to junior staff and students.
- Knowledge of related policies, procedures, and standards within endoscopy, urology and respiratory services.
