Job description

Location: Remote - 1-2 days per month in Burnley

Salary: Up to £35,000 per annum

Contract: 12–18 month FTC, with potential for permanent role

Start: Immediate or as soon as available

Are you a technically minded food professional looking for your next challenge? We’re seeking a Specification Technologist to join our Burnley-based team on a hybrid working basis. This hands-on role covers product specifications, supplier approvals, and compliance, with the potential to become a permanent position for the right candidate.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Product Specification Management: Develop, review, and maintain specifications for own-label and branded products, ensuring all ingredients and details are accurate.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all products meet food safety, nutritional, allergen, and labeling regulations for the UK, EU, and US.
  • Project Support: Manage specification-to-launch processes, proactively resolving issues to support timely product introductions.
  • Supplier & Customer Liaison: Serve as a technical point of contact for suppliers, customers, and internal teams, including compliance audits and technical queries.
  • Documentation & Systems: Maintain specification documentation, manage raw material approvals, and ensure packaging and artwork align with specifications.
  • Support shelf-life testing, QA, and customer audits including BRC accreditation.
  • Maintain and manage the Hamilton Grand recipes & specification system.

Skills & Experience:

  • Level 3 Food Hygiene or above.
  • Strong knowledge of food science, manufacturing, and packaging.
  • Excellent attention to detail, numeracy, and literacy skills.
  • Strong analytical, project management, and IT skills (Microsoft Office and specification systems).
  • Experience with labeling, nutritional and allergen information, and regulatory compliance.
  • Effective communicator, able to liaise with multiple stakeholders.
  • Bakery product knowledge.
  • BRC experience or internal auditor certification.
