Job description

Barnsley Hospital are looking to appoint a fixed term Specialty Doctor in Anaesthetics with a special interest in Obstetric Anaesthesia.

Appointments will be for 10 PAs with the option to increaseto 11.5 PAs by mutual agreement. 1SPA is included inthe 10 PA contract. Clinical workconsists of an EWTD compliant 8 week rolling rota with an out of hourscommitment rotating between intensive care medicine and obstetric anaesthesiaon a 1:8 basis. There are an additional 8-12 clinical weekdaysover each rota period worked flexibly covering intensive care, obstetrics ortheatre work depending on service requirements.

Any applicant who isunable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible forconsideration for the post. If appointed,modification of the job plan will be by mutual agreement with the Trust.

The post will appealto appropriately trained clinicians, who are looking to join a forwardthinking, friendly and welcoming department with a reputation for teaching and professionaldevelopment. The post would suit a doctor with a minimum of two yearsanaesthetic experience and preferably the Primary FRCA examination orequivalent who wishes to develop further supervised experience in obstetricanaesthesia and intensive care medicine.

There will beopportunity and encouragement to develop professionallyboth in terms of clinical skills and non-clinical skills with one SPA per week.

Main duties of the job
  • The post holder will be accountable to the Clinical Lead and to the consultant anaesthetists supervising them.
  • The successful applicant will be contracted to work 10 PAs if full time with an increase to 11.5 by mutual agreement.
  • Resident on-call will be on a 1:8 rota with prospective cover and may be negotiable by mutual agreement between peers and accommodating departmental needs.
  • The post holder will be required:
    i.Tokeep legible, comprehensive and detailed records.
    ii.Tocommunicate fully and effectively with colleagues, patients and relatives.
  • Withinreason the post holders will be expected to deputise for absent colleagues.
  • The post holder will be asked to performadditional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.
  • The post holder will be expected toparticipate in audit and educational sessions within the department. They willbe expected to be involved in the delivery of the clinical governance agenda.
  • It isanticipated that following consultation, the work programme of the postholdersmay change as services develop in line with the needs of the Trust.

Skills and Aptitude
  • Competence in the range of clinical skills required to operate at the level equivalent to a new ST3 trainee.
  • The ability to create, enhance and maintain effective working relationships.

  • Has ability to empathise and interact effectively with patients and the multidisciplinary team.
  • Shows concern for excellence and is able to set, prioritise and monitor performance against objectives.
Qualifications
  • MBBS, MBChB or equivalent.
  • Full GMC Registration with no restrictions or conditions to practice.
  • Primary FRCA or equivalent.
  • MRCP.
  • Relevant courses attended (ALS, APLS, ATLS etc).
Experience
  • Minimum 2 years experience in anaesthesia.
  • Initial assessment of obstetric competencies and core level intensive care training or equivalent experience.
  • Interest in teaching.
  • Understands the importance of audit and service improvement.
  • Additional relevant medical experience (eg acute medicine, ED).
  • Additional experience of obstetric anaesthesia and intensive care medicine.
  • Experience of teaching at a variety of levels.
  • Experience of working on audit and service improvement projects.
