Job description

This post is a whole time Speciality Doctor in Respiratory Medicine, encompassing general respiratory, sleep and cancer pathways. The Department of Respiratory Medicine focuses on ambulatory respiratory services and is a rapidly expanding department. Apart from offering general respiratory outpatient services and full respiratory physiology facilities, the department looks after more than 6000 patients with sleep and ventilatory disorders, offers a combined hospital and community pulmonary rehabilitation programme, has a comprehensive home oxygen assessment and review service and offers specialist and daycase outpatient respiratory services. These include interventional bronchoscopy and EBUS, advanced COPD lung volume reduction work‑up, difficult asthma, food allergy, occupational asthma, and pre‑operative assessment and works closely with Thoracic Surgery (four surgeons), Lung Transplantation as well as the Lung Cancer Radiofrequency Ablation service. There are advanced plans to further expand services including development of a comprehensive one‑stop medical‑surgical pleural service, a multidisciplinary allergy service, a specialist respiratory diagnostic service (interstitial lung disease and difficult asthma), and a direct access breathlessness service.

Main duties of the job
  • Provide clinical care for outpatients and inpatients with chronic and acute respiratory issues.
  • Ensure the highest possible standard of diagnosis, treatment and care in the most effective and timely way.
  • Interpret and report sleep studies (if applicable).
  • Work with the Divisional Director and the Respiratory Clinical Lead to ensure the smooth running of the Respiratory Team and undertake bronchoscopy within the Theatre environment (when trained).
  • Supervise, train and manage junior medical staff and research fellows working within Respiratory to ensure high standards of clinical practice and efficient use of resources.
  • Undertake outpatient and daycase clinics, respiratory meetings and MDTs as necessary to a programme to be agreed with the Clinical Lead.
  • Actively participate in the further development of clinical audit and governance, further developing methods for capture and analysis of clinical data to measure outcomes and improve quality, in collaboration with the Trust's existing quality and governance framework.

There is no formal out of hours on call requirement for this post; however the post holder will be required to take part in informal rota arrangements (Mon to Fri in hours) for urgent inpatient consults, under the direction of the clinical lead.
