Job Summary

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer an opportunity for a Specialist Sonographer within a busy, friendly imaging department. The position requires excellent communication, flexibility, and a passion for women‑centred care and continuous service improvement.

Responsibilities
  • Work closely with the Regional Fetal Medicine team to provide care for high‑risk pregnancies.
  • Collaborate with the lead Obstetrician and Gynaecologist who specialise in ultrasound.
  • Deliver and improve sonography service to women‑centred care.
  • Participate in induction, training, and development opportunities including Masters modules and audit activities.
  • Provide independent, diagnostic reports and respond appropriately to distressed patients.
  • Support teaching, mentoring and colleague training.
  • Perform scans in accordance with best practice and research evidence, prioritising requests appropriately.
  • Maintain quality assurance and governance standards (H&S, COSHH, Manual Handling).

Required Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Ultrasound.
  • Current professional registration (HCPC, RCT, NMC, or equivalent).
  • Relevant degree or equivalent.
  • Post‑qualification experience in an ultrasound department.
  • Completed the preceptorship and capability framework for sonographers.
  • Experience in teaching, mentoring, and supporting colleague training.
  • Ability to interpret and prioritise ultrasound requests, and produce a comprehensive diagnostic report.
  • Leadership or management experience or qualification.
  • Experience responding to distressed patients and staff, including concerning situations.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
Desirable
  • Evidence of audit, research, or local case study publication.
  • Experience in more than one ultrasound area.
  • Audit and research involvement.
