Overview
The role is within the Histopathology laboratory at LCL, part of the Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidate will carry out routine and specialist histology tasks and support the diagnostic service.
Responsibilities
- Embed, microtomy, special stains and quality control in routine histology.
- Assist in cut‑up, frozen section and renal interventional clinics.
- Deputise for team leaders and help with recruitment, training, health & safety, validation, verification, audit and quality management.
- Participate in the main histology laboratory routine work:
- Receive specimens, ensuring correct patient identification and accessioning.
- Assist the pathologist during cut‑up and undertake biopsy cut‑up with responsibility for sample preparation.
- Store specimens safely prior to and after processing.
- Embed processed surgical and post‑mortem material with correct orientation.
- Microtomy – simple sectioning of large blocks, sectioning levels from biopsy material, serial sectioning, and macroscopic quality control.
- Haematoxylin & Eosin (H&E) staining – manual and automated methodologies.
- Participate in specialised areas when required:
- Special staining techniques and primary quality control of stains.
- Freezing for frozen sections, lipids and enzyme histochemistry.
- Cryotomy.
- Muscle histochemistry and enzyme histochemistry.
- Immunofluorescent techniques and immunocytochemistry.
- Collection of renal biopsies, assessing adequacy at the bedside.
- Participate in non‑gynae service and on‑call service.
- Undertake tasks required for CPA accreditation, e.g., reviewing SOPs.

Qualifications
- HCPC registration.
- IBMS specialist diploma in Cellular Pathology.
- Alternatively, 2 years’ demonstrable equivalent experience in histology in lieu of the IBMS diploma.
