Job description

Service Care are working with a SGLD team to offer an excellent opportunity to join a busy, forward-thinking legal team at the centre of the Marine Legal Unit. This role provides a unique chance to contribute to high-profile and influential work, delivering legal support across a wide range of marine matters. The successful candidate will provide expertise in domestic, assimilated, and international marine legislation, as well as fisheries, marine renewables, and marine environmental law.

Key Responsibilities of the Assistant Solicitor Role:
  • Deliver in-depth legal analysis of complex and extensive legislation, advising a broad range of stakeholders including senior officials and Ministers.
  • Assess lawfulness and legal risk, offering clear recommendations to manage and mitigate risks.
  • Provide timely and robust advice on Ministers' functions and duties relating to the marine environment.
  • Communicate complex legal and technical issues clearly and concisely, building trusted relationships across the Marine Directorate, Scottish Government and UK Government.
  • Draft legislation and manage legal issues associated with Scottish Statutory Instruments and UK Statutory Instruments.
Essential Skills & Experience:
  • Strong ability to conduct rigorous legal analysis using multiple information sources.
  • Proven ability to communicate complex issues effectively, providing clear, strategic and fit-for-purpose advice.
  • Demonstrated track record of delivering high-quality legal advice on complex legal areas.
  • Scottish Practising Certificate.
Desirable Skills (Helpful but not essential):
  • Previous public sector experience
  • Experience in marine or environmental law
  • Government legal service experience
Working Pattern & Location:

Hybrid working model with 40% office attendance: 2 days per week in the office, 3 days working from home.

12-month: Contract.

Based at Victoria Quay, Edinburgh.

Salary negotiable depending on candidate experience, Starting from C1: £60,010 – LTD day rate: £314.90 PAYE (inclusive): £356.35.

Fulltime 35hrs a week – maybe open to part time (DOE).
