Software Architect (Net or Java)- Fully Remote

Salary: Up to £95,000 + 9% Bonus

The Role

As Software Architect, you will lead the design and development strategy across critical API, gateway, and switching platforms within a nationwide payment processing ecosystem. You will play a key role in aligning technology vision with strategic company goals, helping shape enterprise architecture, and mentoring teams while staying hands-on in code and solution design.

Key Responsibilities

• Establish pragmatic, high-impact technical direction across the organisation
• Own and evolve the enterprise architecture and technology roadmap
• Lead architectural design for real-time, distributed payment systems
• Define and document architecture principles, integration strategies, and technology standards
• Identify and resolve architectural challenges, balancing strategic vision with hands-on technical leadership
• Contribute to technical solution design and occasionally participate in coding activities
• Monitor, evaluate, and advocate for the adoption of relevant emerging technologies
• Influence buy-vs-build decisions and ensure system scalability, integrity, and performance
• Communicate architecture in accessible terms to engineering teams and senior stakeholders

Essential Criteria

• 10+ years' experience in enterprise architecture and software engineering
• Proven success designing scalable SaaS platforms and API-based architectures
• Deep experience with .NET, Java, or comparable backend language stacks
• Expertise in cloud-hosted applications (Azure and/or AWS)
• Familiarity with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, XML/XSLT, SQL, caching, and middleware integration
• Strong grasp of performance and scalability tuning for high-availability applications
• Excellent system-level problem-solving skills and ability to mentor technical teams
• Clear communicator with strong leadership presence across engineering and product
• Comfortable working in a rapidly evolving tech environment and navigating ambiguity
• Payments domain experience is highly desirable
