Job description

Royal Garrison Church was built around 1212 by the Bishop of Winchester as part of a hospital and hostel for pilgrims. It was used as an ammunition store after the Reformation and later became part of the governor of Portsmouth’s house during Elizabeth I’s reign. The church was restored in the 19th century. Although the nave was badly damaged in a 1941 firebomb raid during World War II, the chancel remains roofed and furnished. The church features fine 20th-century stained-glass windows depicting scenes from the Second World War and its own history.

We are looking for new team members to join our volunteers to help us maintain a presentable site and to provide a warm and friendly welcome to visitors.

As a volunteer at Royal Garrison Church, you will assist English Heritage in caring for the site and ensuring it is safe and ready for visitors to enjoy!

If you have a passion for history and storytelling, you will have the opportunity to share your knowledge and bring the story of Royal Garrison Church to life for visitors of all ages.

You will also have the chance to participate in an exciting and varied programme of events hosted at the church, helping to engage the local community and raise awareness of the church.

The church is open on Fridays and Saturdays from 11 am to 4 pm, and on Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays from 1 pm to 4 pm, from April to October. Sessions are flexible and can be discussed at any stage.

We are happy to discuss any reasonable adjustments we can provide. We will supply a uniform, and offer national, site, and role-specific inductions to welcome you to the team.
