Overview

Role: Signalling Engineering Manager in the London Signalling team, delivering a portfolio of rail projects in the UK and overseas within the Signalling Design team (London Infrastructure practice).

Location: London. Regions: Buckinghamshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Kent, London, Oxfordshire, South East, South West, Surrey.

Responsibilities
  • Leading and directing the signalling design team in all aspects of delivering railway-signalling schemes in accordance with company standards, signalling principles and practice.
  • Managing and controlling all staff appointed to project(s) and work packages under your control.
  • Developing and maintaining project pipelines for an established signalling team, focusing on building skills and experience in leading signalling design.
  • Ensuring successful delivery of technically excellent signalling projects and bids across the multidisciplinary UK Rail portfolio.
  • Determining the signalling design requirements from client briefs and ensuring the design team understands project requirements.
  • Determining design methodology for projects and signing off outline and design specifications.
  • Providing engineering skills and technical knowledge of railway signalling within a high-quality, timely environment.
  • Providing technical guidance for the production of detailed signalling design.
  • Production or Checking of detailed signalling principles designs and calculations.
  • Acting as Contractor’s Responsible Engineer (CRE) for projects.
  • Providing regular reports on the signalling design team performance to Management and planning personnel.
  • Monitoring and reviewing progress to ensure project timescales and targets are met.
  • Mentoring and developing the skills of Signalling team members, including on-the-job guidance and feedback.
  • Collaborating with colleagues and contributing to the successful delivery of projects and the business.
Relationships

Reporting to the UK Signalling Team Leader and locally to the Infrastructure Systems Team Leader, supported by the signalling discipline Technical Head. Work with project teams of Railway and Infrastructure Engineers at bid and project stages.

Essential Skills and Knowledge
  • Extensive hands-on experience in Production, Checking and Approval of feasibility, outline and detailed signalling designs and calculations; other railway design experience is essential.
  • Strong underpinning knowledge of signalling design principles, standards, components, and fabrication methods.
  • Extensive knowledge of signalling design and interlocking principles, standards, components, and fabrication methods.
  • Experience of signalling construction methods and installation.
  • Good understanding of Network Rail or LU signalling assets and project lifecycle on multidisciplinary railway projects.
  • Ability to undertake technical approvals of signalling designs and associated submissions (IDC/IDR process).
  • Knowledge of other rail disciplines and how they interface with signalling engineering.
  • Ability to respond to client requests and challenging deadlines; able to cope with interruptions as projects demand.
  • Strong team leadership within signalling and train control teams or project teams; able to lead discipline-specific activities on multidisciplinary projects.
  • Professional, tactful, and diplomatic communication at the highest levels.
Qualifications
  • Appropriate HND or Higher qualification would be a benefit.
  • IRSE licence Signalling Principles Designer category 1.1.550 and Signalling design verifier 1.1.160.
  • Holding or working towards IRSE Project Engineer or Engineering Manager Design license (1.145 Signalling Design Manager desirable).
  • Member of IRSE and Incorporated Engineer status.
