As a Senior Underwriter, you will be responsible for managing a team of Underwriters and Assistant Underwriters and overseeing the renewal underwriting process. Your expertise in evaluating risk, analyzing policy renewals, and maintaining broker relationships will be crucial.
Your strong leadership and people management skills will be vital in guiding and developing a high-performing team.
The role includes handling a product suite comprising commercial combined, property owners, retail package, primary liability, excess liability, contract works, contractors’ plant and equipment.
Responsibilities
- Renewals underwriter renewing approximately 75 renewals per month across various products such as Commercial Combined, Property Owners, Retail Package, General Liability, Contractors Liability.
- Lead and manage a team of Underwriters and Assistant Underwriters, providing guidance, coaching, and support to promote professional growth and success.
- Maintain premium income per binder in line with projections and company strategy.
- Develop broker relationships to become a key referral point for brokers.
- Identify renewal threats and assist handlers on renewal strategy.
- Ensure compliance with best practice procedures, processes, and timescales.
- Review and update renewal template letters to brokers (invitations and document issuing).
- Filter referrals to insurers.
- Serve as a technical referral point for the renewals team.
- Set performance goals, conduct performance appraisals, and provide constructive feedback to enhance individual and team performance.
- Foster a collaborative and inclusive team culture, promoting effective communication, knowledge sharing, and teamwork.
- Oversee induction and peer review for new starters.
- Conduct monthly one-to-one peer reviews with each renewal handler.
- Develop and maintain relationships with your broker panel.
- Prepare monthly reports.
- Perform duties in accordance with the highest standards and the FCA Conduct Rules, which include acting with integrity, due care, openness with regulators, fairness to customers, and observing market conduct standards.
Experience & Knowledge
- Commercial underwriting experience, specifically in Property and Liability, in the products mentioned above.
- Exceptional leadership and people management skills, with a proven ability to motivate and develop teams.
- Experience in setting goals, monitoring progress, and providing feedback and coaching.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to evaluate complex risks and make informed decisions.
- Experience working with Commercial brokers and insurers.
- Experience in SME organisations and underwriting with delegated authority or licenses.
- Proven ability to develop relationships with key brokers.
- Ability to meet financial targets.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Experience with underwriting and administration software systems.
