The role: Senior Technical Engineer - Structures

As a Senior Technical Engineer at British Airways, you will provide technical leadership and supervision in the technical community and the wider business with specialist responsibility for managing specific elements of the fleet safety, reliability and operational performance with significant influence on the total operating cost of our fleet.

It is a role that will allow you to lead the design and development of innovative technical solutions affecting our fleet by working collaboratively with the manufacturers, component and systems suppliers and your colleagues across the airline. The diverse and extensive fleet means you must be ready to embrace new technologies, learning and leading every day in the implementation of new and better maintenance methodologies and processes. You will manage and develop elements of the approved maintenance programme, carry out safety and technical investigations and implement fleet inspections or modification programmes in consideration of the manufacturer’s recommendations and regulatory requirements.

You will be given support and training to gain appropriate company technical engineer approvals including Part M, Part CAMO, Part 145 and Part 21 design approvals. This is a management grade role with the potential for career development in a broad range of leadership & management roles across the company.

What you’ll do:
  • Compile & approve technical documents & instructions.
  • Drive efficient technical decisions in the wider team.
  • Lead technical discussions across departments using expertise considering the effects on the wider business.
  • Setting technical standards, policy and strategic direction, scoping the impact and influencing future legislation.
  • A consultant on technical & airworthiness matters internally with external suppliers, customers & regulators.
  • Deliver a portfolio of projects & programmes of high commercial value to the business.
  • Coach and mentor team members in contributing to the business plan, train, develop and authorisation of Technical Engineers.
  • Support the Team Leader in developing a high‑performance team culture with behaviours in line with the company hallmarks.
  • Maintain oversight of fleet reliability, supervise fleet technical performance and develop improvement plans to ensure performance targets are achieved.
  • Lead or technically support formal investigations in line with the corporate safety management manual.
  • Prioritise workload and take action as appropriate to maintain compliance with all appropriate company procedures, policies, legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Report, present and communicate operational and business performance and significant events to senior stakeholders in a timely and effective manner.
  • Provide out of hours support as required with your contact details (company phone number) on the Maintrol register.
What you’ll bring to British Airways:
  • Strong influencer and collaborator capable of driving key decisions and projects through.
  • Ability to exercise independent professional judgement within an overall business context.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to distil complex technical information into clear simple messages and communicate to director level. Capable of effective technical leadership.
  • Highly self‑motivated and able to lead change, large projects and process improvement initiatives.
  • Calm and professional when working in a fast paced environment. – Prioritising tasks under pressure.
  • Experience dealing with ambiguity and complexity.
  • Sound technical decision‑making skills.
Your experience:
  • Must hold or be able to gain EASA/CAA Part‑21, Part‑M and Part‑145 authorisations as required.
  • HNC/HND/degree level or equivalent in an approved Engineering subject.
  • Recognised Engineering Apprenticeship or equivalent proven experience.
  • Holding other technical authorisation/licence/workshop approvals as required.
  • Detailed knowledge of EASA regulations, including Part‑M, Part‑CAMO, Part‑21 and Part‑145.
  • Detailed knowledge of safety and quality management systems.
  • Strong commercial acumen.
  • Report and business plan writing.
  • Advanced technical knowledge and understanding of design philosophy for particular aircraft, engine and/or components.
