Job summary

Job description

To provide ward leadership for Ward 1 and will lead on continuous improvement of the patient safety and quality agendas, including safe staffing and roster management, management and learning from incidents, consistency in the delivery of fundamentals of care, and leadership and management of the nursing team.

Main duties of the job

Key Responsibilities

  • Accountable for the quality of care delivered on Ward 1 by the team.
  • Ensure initial assessment is completed within the ward KPI's
  • Ensure timely management of acutely unwell patients
  • Ensure the Ward works effectively, maintaining quality and safety whilst using resources and allocated budgets efficiently.
  • Responsible for the management of the Ward and line management of team members.
  • Ensure team members have identified development needs and a development plan.
  • Works collaboratively and co-operatively with others to develop services provided for patients within the Ward.
About us

Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is an integrated Trust and the only provider of NHS acute care in Walsall, serving a population of 284,300. It provides inpatient and outpatient services at the Manor Hospital as well as a wide range of services in the community. Walsall Manor houses the full range of district general hospital services under one roof. The £170 million development was completed in 2010, and ongoing upgrades ensure the Trust now has state‑of‑the‑art facilities, including a Critical Care Unit, Neonatal Unit, Obstetric Theatre, and Integrated Assessment Unit. A new Urgent and Emergency Care Centre, opened in March 2023, has significantly improved emergency care facilities and capacity, providing almost 5,000 square metres of additional clinical space.

Job responsibilities

Clinical

  • Ensure patient records are maintained and that documentation reflects care provided.
  • Involve patients and carers/relatives in the planning and delivery of care within the ward area.
  • Work collaboratively with other professionals and agencies to ensure patient needs are met.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication with patients and carers/relatives.
  • Ensure clinical practice is up to date with current national guidance/NICE guidance.

Managerial/Leadership

  • Manage the day to day running of the unit, escalating All concerns to Matron.
  • Comply with policy and procedure in data collection and reporting to ensure compliance of others within the team.
  • Responsible for ensuring the team address ongoing health care needs and where appropriate, undertake effective discharge planning.
  • Maximise best use of clinical resources, monitor and evaluate patient flow, admission, and discharge arrangements.
  • Develop the services within the ward and implement service improvements.
  • Monitor and evaluate health, safety and security of self and others and implement best practice within the ward area.
  • Act on concerns raised by team members or service users.

Education and Development

  • Ensure team members have a development review, and that issues of poor competence are addressed.
  • Ensure own compliance and compliance of others regarding mandatory training and regulatory requirements, maintaining records of training and development undertaken on ESR.
  • Participate in the development of others through involvement in training, education, and development within and outside the department.
  • Evaluate the development of team members and comply with regulatory guidelines.

Clinical Governance

  • Undertake ward audit and the development of and implementation of action plans for poor compliance.
  • Ensure compliance with policies, procedures and clinical guidelines for self and others, and participate in the development and review of the same.
  • Continually monitor standards of care and lead in the improvement of care, be responsible for benchmarking, audit, and research within the ward environment.
  • Lead patient and public involvement activities in the ward area, leading to service improvement.
  • Provide responses to patient complaints
  • Promote peoples equality, diversity, and rights
  • Ensure effective emergency plans and procedures are in place and that staff can respond appropriately in emergency situations.
Qualifications
  • oRN
  • oPost Registration qualification or evidence of further study
  • oMentorship qualification or relevant experience
Experience
  • oBroad range of clinical experience, including recent experience in Elderly Care/ General Medicine
  • oExperience of managing others
  • oSignificant experience working in Band 6 nursing role
