This role will focus on leading and executing Discord's regulatory response and proactive engagement strategies across the EU/UK and Australia, particularly concerning online safety and content moderation. This is a dynamic, fast-paced role suited to someone who thrives in a rapidly changing regulatory landscape. You’ll be instrumental in ensuring our compliance while also advocating for Discord’s interests as we navigate the evolving legal environment.

What You’ll Be Doing:
  • Regulatory Response: Lead Discord’s responses to regulatory requests. Assess risks and opportunities, gather necessary data, and draft compelling, accurate responses to meet obligations and promote Discord’s interests.
  • Engagement with Regulators: Present Discord’s approach to regulatory compliance to relevant authorities and stakeholders. Build strong relationships with regulators to ensure our practices align with evolving regulations.
  • Collaboration: Work alongside product counsel on regulatory compliance-related updates to products, ensuring that changes align with legal requirements.
  • Monitoring Regulations: Stay informed on new and updated regulations in the UK, EU, and Australia, anticipating enforcement risks and guiding the organization on compliance.
  • Cross-Department Collaboration: Partner with public policy and communications teams to shape Discord’s safety communications and ensure a consistent narrative across platforms.
  • Templates and Practices: Maintain up-to-date templates for company practices on key topics like privacy, security, and teen safety. Ensure the company’s practices align with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Defensive Legal Matters: If workload permits, support defensive responses to consumer complaints, small claims, and other related issues.
What You Should Have:
  • Experience: 10+ years working in regulatory law related to internet regulation, specifically around user safety, minor safety, privacy, data protection, and consumer protection.
  • Knowledge: In-depth understanding of UK/EU and Australia regulatory landscapes, including the UK & Australian Online Safety Act and the EU Digital Services Act. Familiarity with GDPR, AI Act, and other privacy/data protection laws is a plus.
  • Regulatory Engagement: Experience working with regulators in the UK, EU, or Australia and responding to formal inquiries from regulatory agencies.
  • Licensing: A valid license to practice law in a relevant jurisdiction.
  • Industry Experience: Prior experience working in the social media, communication/messaging, content, or gaming industries is highly preferred.
  • Project Management: Proven ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize effectively, and achieve results.
  • Emotional Intelligence: Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate strategically, independently, and with sound judgment.
  • Diversity & Inclusion: A commitment to promoting diversity, inclusion, and belonging in the workplace.
Bonus Points:
  • Familiarity with Discord and the video game industry.
  • Relevant litigation experience in online safety or content regulation.
