Working hours: 37.5hrs per week (full time)

About the role

Nanomox is seeking an experienced scientist to work on the valorisation of polymetallic waste. This role will focus on the use of hydrometallurgical and ionometallurgical processes for the targeted extraction of valuable metals from waste. The scientist, in collaboration with the R&D Lead, will be responsible for the delivery of Nanomox’s portfolio of research activities to support technology and product development. This role is not an entry-level position for Materials Scientists, it requires expertise in chemical process development for metal extraction.

Important Application Notes:

  1. This role does not involve materials synthesis, coatings or thin-film research. Candidates with experience limited to materials characterisation or materials development will not be considered.
  2. If you applied previously for this role, please do not re-apply. Your previous application is being reviewed.
  3. This role requires immediate start (1 – 3 months). Candidates must be currently eligible to work in the UK. If you do not meet these criteria, unfortunately you will not be considered.

Essential:

  • PhD in Chemistry/Chemical Engineering/Metallurgical Engineering or relevant discipline or MSc + 3 years (min) or relevant experience.
  • Experience in the development and validation of hydrometallurgical and/or ionometallurgical processes for metal extraction.
  • Hands-on experience with metal recovery from polymetallic waste.
  • Proficient in working/managing a chemical laboratory, creating/approving SOPs, maintaining high Health and Safety standards.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, able to collaborate within teams & collaborators.
  • Excellent research skills including hypothesis, experimental design, and data analysis and interpretation.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral (English), with the ability to produce clear reports for both high-level and technical audiences.

Desirable:

  • Experience in the scale-up of hydrometallurgical or ionometallurgical processes.
  • Proficiency in relevant analytical techniques, e.g. XRD, XRF, SEM/EDX, and chemical characterisation of polymetallic waste e.g. elemental analysis, ICP-MS, LC-MS, GC-MS, TGA, IR, UV-Vis.
  • Familiarity with ionic liquids and/or deep eutectic solvents.
  • Previous experience managing direct reports in a research environment.

Key responsibilities:

  • Act as the lead researcher responsible for delivering designated research activities. This will include overall project design and planning, developing a knowledge base to become Nanomox’s expert in the relevant project area, ensuring material and equipment are available, and coordinating other team members to ensure the delivery of high-quality projects in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Develop and conduct high-quality experimental test plans.
  • Keep organised, accurate and up-to-date experimental records in line with organisational practices.
  • Report and manage project risks and implement mitigations, in a timely manner.
  • Provide advice, technical support and troubleshooting across the organisation’s portfolio of research projects.
  • Ensure regular and effective communication to ensure Line Manager has visibility on project risks, progress, planning and execution.
  • Adhere to, and ensure adherence by other staff to, good laboratory practices and any relevant organisational processes and policies.
  • Supervise the laboratory activities of other staff members, as required.
  • Provide technical and other support for grant applications, as required.
  • Support dissemination activities (conferences, tweets, technical reports/publications etc).
  • Other responsibilities as designated, from time to time, by the R&D Lead or Head of R&D.
