Job description

We are excited to offer a fantastic opportunity for a Permanent Senior Project Manager offering remote working with extensive travel as and when we deliver projects.

HOURS OF WORK - Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours per week

Join our vibrant, inclusive community in Group working on IT projects helping the organisation evolve by putting new technology and data tools in place and making changes to how the business works.

You will be a leader in project management deliverables and oversee complex IT projects. This role will lead and direct multidisciplinary project teams collaborating with business units and IT to deliver technically robust, high‑quality outcomes in alignment with business objectives and Amey strategy. You will collaborate with stakeholders at all levels to set the project outcomes and be responsible for their delivery, definition and planning. The Senior PM will manage projects and programmes from inception to completion, ensuring that benefits and outputs are realised on time and within budget and to the appropriate quality.

The Senior PM will embrace continuous improvement of the project management processes within Amey by championing best practice. In addition to managing teams (and acting as a people manager where needed), responsibilities include managing and delivering work packages with internal teams, external suppliers, and third parties, management of dependencies & risks, driving benefit realisation, and with a focus on ensuring seamless change adoption within the organisation.

What you will do:
  • Work closely with the Principal Project Manager, leveraging their expertise to navigate ambiguity, manage risk, and address complex challenges. As a Senior Project Manager, you will lead initiatives with confidence, proactively resolving issues and adapting plans as necessary.
  • Foster a culture of excellence and innovation, ensuring all project deliverables consistently meet or exceed standards for quality, cost, and timeliness.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to develop and communicate a compelling project vision.
  • Establish and maintain stakeholder relationships, providing decision‑makers with robust evidenced options and managing expectations at all projects.
  • Act as a liaison between multidisciplinary teams, breaking down organisational silos to foster collaboration and innovation.
  • Work with peers to maintain standards.
  • Deliver high‑impact communications to internal boards and external stakeholders, including project risk and issue updates.
  • Establish and oversee collaborative partnerships with external vendors and clients to enable project success.
Analysing and Planning
  • Develop and monitor comprehensive initiation artifacts, ensuring projects have a clear, defined scope, requirements and deliverables which contribute value to the wider organisation.
  • Maintain awareness of internal and external factors which might impact your planning and delivery and make changes as required.
Design and Deliver
  • Adopt robust risk‑management frameworks, proactively identifying, evaluating and mitigating critical threats to project delivery and benefit realisation.
  • Impose rigorous financial discipline, forecasting and controlling budgets in the face of financial constraints.
  • Lead project reviews and ensure effective capture, dissemination and adoption of learnings at all organisational levels.
  • Monitor and evaluate project performance metrics, aligning outcomes to key performance indicators.
  • Manage and steer complex, large‑scale programmes up to and exceeding 24 months in duration.
  • Communicate for change projects pan Amey.
  • Role requires extensive travel to establish and build relationships with stakeholders through face‑to‑face meetings and forums.
Benefit Realisation
  • Champion a culture of continuous improvement, utilising lessons learned and project best practices across the portfolio.
  • Champion adoption of sustainable, environmentally responsible practices in project design and delivery.
  • Ensure the delivery of quick wins as identified are completed and benefits realisation plan is embedded at project closure.
What you will bring:
  • Bachelors or Masters degree in an appropriate subject.
  • Have and be maintaining relevant APMP professional PM qualification.
  • Full membership of the Association for Project Management.
  • Able to deliver projects of 6‑24 months duration that involve multiple delivery teams, spanning various organisations, geographical locations (both national and international) or sectors, most likely with novel technology and solutions.
  • Engage and manage sponsors and stakeholders, routinely at Account Manager or above levels, and other stakeholders and suppliers through potentially challenging discussions.
  • Very good oral communicator who is able to present arguments and ideas well. Can work through conflict where decisions need to be made over priority, being able to reach, articulate and defend the recommended decision and maintain a cohesive delivery using both formal and informal means.
  • Understand and advocate what 'good' looks like from a sponsor and wider business perspectives as appropriate for that project.
  • Very good working knowledge of relevant project management software and similar analytical tools.
  • Takes ownership for the preparation and checking of deliverables and is fully capable of working unsupervised.

We welcome applications from a diverse range of candidates.
