Overview

We are working closely alongside a Local Authority in Somerset to assist with the appointment of a Senior Planning Officer, on a 6.5-month contract, highly likely to be extended at client's discretion. Please apply with your CV for immediate consideration.

Rate of Pay: £36.25 - £48.48 per hour

Responsibilities
  • Manage and determine a caseload of complex planning applications, including major development schemes.
  • Negotiate with developers, agents, and third parties while balancing policies, site constraints, and material considerations.
  • Draft reports and recommendations for delegated decisions and Planning Committees.
  • Provide professional support and guidance to Planning Officers and colleagues.
  • Represent the Council at Planning Committees and act as expert witness at appeals, hearings, and public inquiries.
Qualifications
  • Degree in Town Planning or related subject (or equivalent experience).
  • The postholder will require membership of (or be eligible to join) the RTPI
Experience Required
  • Should have experience of working at a Senior level in Development Management and demonstrate the ability to manage a caseload and competing workloads to maintain performance targets
  • Should have experience of working within a team to support team development and CPD
Essential Requirements
  • Strong knowledge of planning law, enforcement, policy, and case law.
  • Proven ability to manage complex planning applications within statutory timeframes.
  • Excellent negotiation, communication, and influencing skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines.
  • IT literacy with experience in data entry, reporting, and presentations.
