A leading multidisciplinary engineering consultancy is seeking an experienced Senior or Principal Civil Engineer to join its growing team in Birmingham. This role offers the opportunity to deliver a diverse portfolio of building and infrastructure projects, guiding them from feasibility and concept stages through to detailed design, construction, and site inspections.

Projects are wide-ranging and often involve close collaboration with specialists from other disciplines, offering exposure to innovative, integrated engineering solutions. You will take the lead in developing civil engineering planning and design solutions, producing high-quality plans and drawings across all project stages, and delivering design work for earthworks, internal site roads, pavements, and drainage systems. Alongside technical delivery, you will work directly with clients and contractors to shape infrastructure and development schemes, as well as mentor junior team members to support their professional growth.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead the development of civil engineering planning and design solutions from concept through to construction.
  • Prepare plans, drawings, and technical documentation across all stages of the development cycle.
  • Design earthworks, site roads, pavements, and drainage systems, including preparing specifications.
  • Deliver highway schemes (S38/S278) and S104 drainage applications.
  • Liaise with local authorities and other stakeholders to secure necessary approvals.
  • Carry out QA checks to ensure high-quality outputs.
  • Prepare fee proposals, define project scope, budgets, and programmes.
  • Supervise, delegate, and provide coaching to junior team members.
  • Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, clients, and third-party organisations.

Qualifications and experience

  • Degree-qualified Civil Engineer, ideally Chartered or Incorporated (or working towards chartership) with the ICE.
  • Proven experience in delivering commercially successful projects and maintaining strong client relationships.
  • Capable of leading design teams and mentoring junior engineers.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to influence and collaborate across disciplines.
  • Experience in drainage strategies for planning.
  • Earthworks modelling and pavement design (or interest in developing these skills).
  • Industry-standard software such as InfoDrainage and AutoCAD/Civils 3D (or equivalent).

Location and opportunities

Based in Birmingham with opportunity to work on varied, challenging projects across multiple sectors in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment. Competitive salary and benefits package.
