The role of a qualified Senior Practitioner involvescompleting holistic assessment of need, risk assessment & management,delivering evidence-based treatment & interventions, admission/discharge,coaching & supervising junior colleagues, attending and leading meetings(including MDT's, reviews, team meetings, etc.), maintaining the wardenvironments, supporting the friends/families of people using services, andcontributing to the safe and effective delivery of the service whilst ensuringthat the people who use our services are always involved and at the heart ofany decision-making. Clinical: responsibility for assessment, admission anddischarge processes, care planning, maintaining accurate records and must havea standard that reflects their level of clinical expertise, use of specialisedpsychometric tools to complement the assessment and evaluation of patient care,liaise with community based services and resources such as education, socialsecurity, employment, housing, police and voluntary sector organisations tofacilitate the delivery of the most appropriate and best possible care for theindividual patients, their carers and families, discuss complex issuessurrounding risk management and plan care accordingly advising others regardingmanagement of care, respond the patient crises in a positive pro-active manner,develop clear care pathways, including methods to reduce the risk of furthercrises developing, provide telephone support to any patients or carers, outsideagencies or clinicians who require information, advice or crisis intervention(this will require the postholder to make immediate, effective decisions thatwill have implications for the outcomes of the patients' mental health. Thepostholder must be able to assess complex mental health conditions and developand implement care packages in a variety of settings.
Managerial: act as a role model for staff, which will involveproviding support and guidance to staff in order to maximise the experience ofpatients whilst they are an inpatient, take charge of the lodge in the absenceof the manager with continuing responsibility, plan and organise workloads forstaff within the area to include allocation of staff, planning patient care andgroups etc., assist with managing positive attendance in clinical areas inaccordance with Navigo's Managing Attendance Policy.
Clinical Governance: the postholder must be able to evaluateand review research and other relevant literature and be aware of theimplications of the social and local policies, procedures and informationpackages related to service delivery.
Training: there is an expectation that the postholder will beinvolved in the provision of internal training sessions and presentations toother services and students and may be asked to provide specific training ormentorship to students.
Additional: the postholder will be expected to takeresponsibility for a number of other tasks including risk assessments ofpatients who are in crisis and may be displaying high risk behaviours,supporting the clinical lead both clinically and managerial, facilitatingsupervision and mentoring students, having an understanding of the relevantpolicies and their application to related face to face physical aggression andassociated actions. The postholder will be expected to professionallycontribute and/or lead and manage serious untoward incidents, challengingbehaviours, ensuring all parties are debriefed and supported. The postholderwill be expected to be involved in and implement new and revised policieswithin their own sphere of work.
